Beautiful beaches and excursions and very friendly people. However the constant selling and non stop soliciting on the beach took away from the charm of the island. The irony is that if they replaced every 3 waiters with one beach seller the service would improve massively. You just need to look at a beach seller and they will come running to you. Meanwhile you could be doing star jumps in restaurants and no waiter will notice you! Favourite exursion was the spice tour ( a must) To The Hill Kindichi farm was exceptional. Very professional and no hassling to buy things. The Nukapenda sand bar was an epic picnic in this low tide sandbar in the middle of the ocean in crystal clear waters. Amazing cooked sea food right on the beach. The atmosphere was tarnished by the sellers on the beach who swarmed us when the boat arrived and the guides did nothing about it. Prison island was meh and if you like tortoises you might like it but over crowded. Stone town was interesting but disappointing. All the ‘UNESCO’ heritage sites were in ruins. Clearly the fees they charge go in the pockets of the staff so I doubt they will ever have money to fix things. Swimming with the dolphins was fun at Mnemba island and good snorkeling there. But the boats they use are ‘safety last’ and uncomfortable, no life jackets or any safety gear. There are many other boats on that trip that go together so I guess help is near by?!!!! Paje is a good base to explore the south of the island like the Blue Hole snorkeling and the Jozani forest to see the monkeys and mangroves. It's lively with a Saturday night beach parties. Very windy hence the kite surfers at dangerous distances from swimmers. We didn't swim there. Nungwi was the most lively town but constant hassling from people selling things. Literally every local there will offer you something to buy. The east part of Nungwi is the best place to stay to access everything. Sexy Fish was our favourite restaurant. Kendwa is upscale and the best beach on the island but you can't just step outside the hotel for anything. There is nothing to do here in the village other than sit on the beach, which is an exceptional beach. It's a lovely island with perfect weather in January. Just be prepared for poverty the minute you step outside the hotel and constant hassling by sellers and performers. Haggle for everything lol

Amazing place! Loved the beaches and the history. I visited several parts of the Island i.e Stone Town, Kendwa, Nungwi, Paje and Kizimkazi. If you plan to do so, be prepared to spend on transport cos public transport isn’t the best.

A spectacularly beautiful island, also known as Zanzibar. We stayed on the North West coast in Fukuchani (see my review of Milele Villas) and on the North East coast on Matemwe beach (see my review of Zi Villa). I couldn't choose to say one side was better than the other. The more touristic areas are further south so there is less to do without travelling. But it was perfection. Itinerary: Day 1, arrive in Fukuchani and settle into the villa, mid afternoon. Around 1.5 hours drive from the airport. Day 2, take a trip to Fukuchani caves & ruins (see my review), this is around a 20 minute walk from the villa. Day 3, take a spice farm tour (see my review of Abeid Spice Farm). Around 35 minutes drive Day 4, take a buggy tour (see my review of Zanzibuggy). Around 30 minutes drive to Nungwi/Kendwa area. Days 5-7, mainland Tanzania for a Serengeti safari. (Separate reviews posted for the Serengeti National park, Ngorongoro conservation area, the Masai encampment, Matawi tented lodge and Marera valley lodge. Also of the tour company, Kiliclimb). Days 8 to 14, now staying in the Matemwe area. We travelled back to nungwi a few times to a beautiful beach we found (see Zanzibuggy review for an approximate location). We took a long walk from Kendwa to Nungwi and through the markets in Nungwi. This is around half an hour away by taxi. We also visited Stone Town in this half of the trip, where I've left various reviews, this was around 75 minutes drive. The other larger tour we did was a boat trip including to Mnemba Atoll, I have written various reviews about this, see review of Captain John Matemwe - this isn't really worth the hype or fuss. No transfer necessary, the boat beached outside the villa. A similar drive back to the airport, around 90 minutes. I implore you, whilst on the island, visit some local villages and schools and see what life is like here, it really puts your own life into perspective and it's an immensely humbling experience.
