This museum might be the most family friendly one there is! Truly someone at any age will find a room that matches their interests, and kids are sure to have a blast as well. It's 3 floors with sections jumping from technological inventions to iconic pop culture props and everything in between. My favorite sections by far were the transportation and the entertainment rooms. But there are so many entire rooms dedicated to niches like history of marine vessels and democracy in the US. I really want to stres that there is something for everyone here! I really appreciate the focus on physical artifacts and models. They make the experience more immersive and offer an extremely rare opportunity to see history with your own eyes. My favorite examples of this are Abraham Lincolns top hat, the amber mosquito from Jurassic Park, and any of the antique cars spanning the 1900s. This isn't just a traditional museum, it's a fun experince guides by your interests. Enjoy :)
This is located on the mall near the Natyral History museum. The main attraction is the star spangled banner which is a thoughtfully desinged exhibit that takes you thru the journey of the formation of this great nation and what truly set it apart from other nations ruled by kings and queens. Taking kids here naturally gets them to understand the democratic values and partiotism that was instrumental in the early years of this nation. The other must visit is the first ladies of the US exhibit.
The Smithsonian National Museum of American History is an absolute must visit in Washington, D.C. The museum offers an incredible journey through the nation’s past, with exhibits that are both educational and engaging for all ages. From iconic artifacts like the Star Spangled Banner to fascinating displays on American culture, innovation, and everyday life, there’s so much to explore. The layout is well organized, making it easy to spend a few hours discovering different sections at your own pace. The staff were friendly and helpful, and I really appreciated that admission is free, which makes this world class museum accessible to everyone. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or just looking for a meaningful way to spend the day, this museum is definitely worth a visit. Highly recommend!
In depth museum touching the important points of American History. Chronicled from the first settlers and going thought he past 250 years of the country, there are great displays and interesting facts. We really enjoyed seeing Julia Child's kitchen and the information showing how much of an influence she was on American cooking. We also enjoyed the more modern displays of movies and television along the with computer and currency display. Things to not miss are the display of old glory, the George Washington Statue, the hall of inventions, and, if you have children with you or those young at heart, the Spark Lab where you can invent things. You can easily spend a couple of days in here, and more than a few hours can be quite a bit.
We came with some kids and they thought it was the best museum! But they barely left the wegmans wonderplace. The spark lab looked really amazing but there was a school trip and the whole room was full of a crazy number of kids in purple shirts and they stayed in there a long time. It’s great, but felt a little off when just an everyday kid wants to do it with their family. Wonder if there is a way to limit school groups and have the spilt if they are larger in the smaller interactive places. The rest of the museum was full of pop culture gems. This a very nostalgic museum for Americans, educational for foreigners.
