"Santa Maria della Salute is undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking landmarks in Venice. Its massive white dome creates a stunning silhouette against the sky, marking the entrance to the Grand Canal. Beyond its architectural beauty, the history of this church is deeply moving, as it was built as a symbol of hope and gratitude after the city survived the Great Plague. The interior is vast and filled with masterpieces by Titian and Tintoretto. Whether you view it from a vaporetto or walk through its grand doors, the sense of peace and history is overwhelming. If you want the perfect photo of Venice, this is the spot. A true masterpiece of Baroque art that you simply cannot miss!"

Santa Maria della Salute is one of Venice’s most striking landmarks, its white dome rising dramatically at the entrance to the Grand Canal. Built after the devastating 1630 plague as a vow to the Virgin Mary, the church carries deep historical meaning. Inside, the spacious octagonal design feels calm and reflective, with subtle artworks tied to its origins. Visiting today, it’s not just the beauty that stands out, but the sense of resilience and gratitude that still defines this remarkable basilica. There are a number of other really interesting historical and cultural sites nearby.

I have to be honest: Venice was overwhelming for me. The crowds of tourists made it difficult to walk or truly enjoy the city. However, stepping inside the Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute was a profound relief a necessary escape from the chaos outside. This octagonal, baroque masterpiece isn't just architecturally stunning; it’s a sanctuary of peace. The grandeur of its massive dome and the masterpieces by Titian in the sacristy are beautiful, but for me, the true value was the calm and quiet I found there. It was a beautiful respite that allowed me to appreciate the city's history without the crowds. If Venice feels like too much, this is the place to find a moment of calm.

Striking from the outside, but more restrained within. This grand Baroque basilica stands at the entrance to the Grand Canal, directly opposite St Mark’s Square, and its dome is one of Venice’s most recognisable skyline features. Entry is free, though there isn’t a huge amount to see inside compared to some of Venice’s more ornate churches. The real highlight is arguably the setting step outside for lovely views back across the Grand Canal and toward St Mark’s.

This is of course one of the primary sites of interest in Venice and filled with great works by the master Titian. The main altar too is spectacular. The marble flooring directly under the famous dome is not currently accessible and there is some repair work going on. The church is free to enter.
