A cathedral dedicated to Saint Nicholas and one of the oldest churches in Stockholm, with origins dating back to the 13th century. Originally a Catholic church, it became part of the Lutheran Church of Sweden following the Reformation in the 16th century. The cathedral has long been closely connected to the Swedish royal family, hosting coronations, royal weddings, and national memorial services. Built primarily in the Gothic style with a brick structure, it is best known for its impressive sculpture of Saint George slaying the dragon.
Storkyrkan is one of the most impressive historical sites in Gamla Stan, the historic center of Stockholm. The church dates back to the 13th century, making it the oldest church in the city. Although its current exterior was largely shaped by a Baroque reconstruction in the 18th century, the interior still preserves many fascinating medieval elements. The cathedral is definitely worth visiting, especially if you are interested in history and architecture. Inside you can admire beautiful vaulted ceilings, historic altars, and one of the most famous artworks in Sweden – the wooden sculpture “St. George and the Dragon” from the 15th century. The church also houses other important artworks and religious artifacts that reflect the long history of Stockholm. Storkyrkan is also known as the royal cathedral. Many important national and royal ceremonies have taken place here, including royal weddings and other significant events in Swedish history. The atmosphere inside is calm and solemn, offering a nice contrast to the busy streets of the Old Town outside. Overall, it’s a wonderful place to stop during a walk around Gamla Stan – both for its cultural significance and for the chance to experience one of the oldest and most iconic buildings in Stockholm.
The ticket to Stockholm Cathedral costs 120 SEK - and I saw half the people turning away when they saw they should buy a ticket to get in. What a sin! Stocholm Cathedral is, to be sure, one of the most impressive attractions in Stockholm. The cathedral is easy to find, because it is located in the heart of Old City, beside the king's castle, and streams of the Old City tourists go on the streets next to the cathedral. The cathedral's interior is so rich in details that one could spend there half a day just admiring.. and you are walking there literally on the tombs - many highly ranked Swedish people, including some kings and queens, are buried there. Stockholm Cathedral is absolutely worth of visit.
Wonderful church restrained glorious interior. Saw an amazing choral performance with offcstage first work and a finale procession to a standing ovation.
Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan) is the city’s oldest church (opened 1306). Long connected to the royal family, it has hosted many historic royal moments. Inside, you’ll find the famous Saint George and the Dragon statue—an unforgettable piece of history and legend.
