We walked from Anfu Road towards Wukang Mansion. The surrounding streets and buildings along the way were very photogenic, with lots of nice European style architecture and a pleasant vibe. Wukang Mansion is definitely one of the iconic landmarks in Shanghai, so the area was extremely crowded. It is nice to see in person, but honestly nothing too special to me, mainly just a quick photo stop. We also checked out the popular bakery just a few steps away, but it was super packed as well (visited on a Saturday), so be prepared to queue if you plan to buy anything.
Wukang Mansion (武康大楼) is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and photogenic buildings in Shanghai. Its unique ship-like shape and French Renaissance architecture are stunning, but as a tourist destination, the experience can be a bit polarizing. Architectural Beauty: Designed by the famous architect László Hudec, the building is a masterpiece. The "prow" of the building at the intersection makes for an incredible photo, especially with the classic Shanghai plane trees lining the streets. Vibrant Neighborhood: The surrounding Wukang Road and Anfu Road area is lovely. It’s filled with trendy coffee shops, bakeries (like Sunflour or Baker & Spice), and small boutiques. It’s a great place for a "city walk." History: You can really feel the "Paris of the East" vibe here. It’s a protected historical site that has housed many famous celebrities over the last century. Massive Crowds: Because it’s so "Instagram-famous," the intersection is constantly swarmed with tourists and professional photographers. It can be quite stressful trying to get a clear shot without dozens of other people in your frame. View Only: It is important to remember that this is a residential building. You cannot go inside or explore the interior, so your visit is essentially limited to standing on the sidewalk and looking at the exterior. Overhyped Experience: Unless you are a major architecture enthusiast or specifically looking for that one "hero shot" for social media, it might feel like a lot of effort just to see one street corner. Once you’ve taken your photo, there isn't much else to do at the building itself. Wukang Mansion is a 3-star experience for me. It’s beautiful and historically significant, but the extreme crowds and the fact that you can only view it from the street make it a bit of a "one-and-done" stop. It’s worth passing by if you are already exploring the French Concession, but don't expect a deep or relaxing tourist experience.

Wukang Mansion is a total standout in the French Concession, mostly thanks to that iconic "flat-iron" wedge shape that looks incredible in photos. It was designed by László Hudec and has this classic, old-school Shanghai vibe with its red bricks and European style. People flock here because it’s one of the most Instagrammable spots in the city and captures that perfect mix of history and architecture. It's definitely a must-see if you're wandering around the neighborhood!
