Tucked away in a narrow alley in Jongno-gu, Seoul, lies Imun Seolnongtang, the oldest restaurant in Korea, serving its signature ox bone soup since 1904. Visiting this place feels less like going to a diner and more like stepping into a living museum of Korean modern history. The soup served here is distinct from the artificially creamy, white broths common today. Its broth is clear and light, meticulously skimmed of excess fat. While it might seem subtle at first, each spoonful reveals a deep, nutty aroma—a rustic yet profound flavor that has likely remained unchanged for over a century. The true highlight of the meal was the kimchi and kkakdugi (radish kimchi). Their refreshing tang and clean finish provided the perfect counterpoint to the mild broth. Tasting them, I couldn't help but admire the unwavering passion and stubborn dedication required to preserve such a taste for over a hundred years. In a fast-paced city like Seoul where trends come and go, I sincerely hope Imun Seolnongtang remains a steadfast symbol of the city's culinary heritage, continuing to warm the hearts of generations to come.
Served mainly beef bone soup, ox bone soup etc. The soup is very flavourful. Recommended by hotel nearby, this restaurant is frequent by locals and has more than 100 years of history. Good service too. Comfortable seating. Highly recommended if you like traditional local delicacy. And, the kimchi is tasty.
Very tasty broth and food overall, with very generous portions for a reasonable price. Service was also friendly and very efficient. The place is quite popular but we didn’t have to wait visiting on a weekday for dinner. I would certainly recommend this if you’re in the area and you’re looking forward to trying ox bone broth, or one of the many other options on the menu.
First time to eat seollongtang and it was great! The soup does not have any taste so you will season it with pepper, salt, or spring onions as you like. The meat was tender and tasty. It has rice and noodles as well. Side dish (kimchi) is provided in your table and you can get as many as you like. My order arrived instantly. Staff was also nice and explained everything in limited English. Toilet also available. Overall, it was a satisfying meal.
This spot has such a nostalgic vibe and provides the traditional Korean bone broth is clean, milky, and being served with steamed rice inside and tastes like home-cooked meal. It is served with side dishes of Napa cabbage and radish kimchi. Delicious!
