La Moneda is a historic presidential palace dating back to 1805, standing at the same name square. It's a vast building in neoclassic style occupying the entire block which witnessed several important historic events. Heavy police presence around and felt very safe with many locals having picnic on the lawns around

I travel full-time and love getting to see a changing of the guard. This was hands-down the most grand display of a changing of the guard that I have ever seen thus far in South America or Europe. They had two horses and an entire band and it lasts about 30 minutes. The band will even play songs that you may recognize. I highly recommend this if you are visiting Santiago, Chile. Wear sun protection as the path of the sun may change rapidly during your time there. They were doing restoration on the façade of the palace while we were there. It may be gone by the time you visit :-)

Beautiful building but you can’t get too close to it because it is gated off and there are guards. There is a huge Chile flag nearby.

We went to see the changing of the guard. The ceremony started promptly at 10 on an even day (no ceremony on odd days). It was fun to see the guards, the horses, the band and the Chilean patriotism. The band played some modern music, e.g. an Abba medley that the crowd enjoyed. Pro Tip: I suggest you arrive 10 minutes early and stand on the Moneda and Morande corner (at the barrier) to get the best view.

The government seat of power, worth visiting. There is a cultural center right below the ground level, a pleasant surprise for tourists and locals alike.
