Absolutely incredible dining experience! Every dish was beautifully presented and packed with flavor. The dumplings were perfectly crisp on the outside and juicy inside, and the edamame had just the right balance of seasoning. The sushi was fresh, creative, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The ramen was rich and comforting, and the dessert was the perfect sweet finish—light, fresh, and not overly heavy. You can really tell there’s attention to detail in every plate. Great ambiance and overall vibe too. Definitely a place I’ll keep coming back to. Highly recommend!
Today I visited Shizen SF, came right at 5pm and got lucky to get in with no wait, even without reservation (but honestly you prob should book ahead, this place gets packed fast). Shizen is a 100% vegan sushi spot and Michelin guided. I used to have a very great dining experience at Tane Vegan Izakaya in Palo Alto (another vegan sushi spot), so I just knew this place would hit! And I'm not wrong!!! I'm having a coffee date later so I only ordered two rolls: Candlestick and Boddy & Soul. Candlestick came out with a whole fire presentation, I was surprised and almost forgot to film. The roll had spicy tofu, cucumber, avocado, seaweed pearls, shichimi, and it tasted just like California roll no joke! I was shocked! (I mean it's not 100% alike but definitely around 80-90%) Boddy & Soul is recommended by staff. It's one of the most ordered item and I totally get the hype. The roll has tempura spicy tofu, green onion, sesame, spicy aioli, sweet soy. It's crunchy and the sauce was super flavorful, even better than some regular sushi I’ve ever had. You have to try it!!!!! Honestly I’d go back again multiple times just for this roll. Overall vibe was nice, service was good, food came pretty quick too. I’m not a vegan but I really enjoyed this place and for sure it converted me into a regular now!
Best sushi I’ve ever had. Best ramen I’ve ever had. Insane. I will be back and I will also be trying the Berkeley location (Tane). Get ANY of the specialty rolls and the ramen and prepare to have your mind blown!! Boddy and Soul specially roll (spelled like that yes) is unbelievable
Shizen offers truly excellent vegan sushi and izakaya dishes. The food is creative and flavorful, and the service is very attentive. It is a small, popular space, so a reservation is absolutely necessary. The only downside is that seating time is strictly limited to keep things moving, so it’s not a place for a long, lingering dinner. Still, the quality of the food makes it a must-visit in SF.
Delicious vegan sushi that actually delivers on flavor! The Dynamite Roll (10/10) was the highlight, followed closely by the Roasted Bell Pepper Nigiri (9/10). The Shishito Peppers and Candlestick roll were also solid (8/10). The price point feels high given the portion sizes, but the technique is impressive and it gives vegans a genuine sushi experience. Highly recommended for the execution, especially if you don't eat fish.
