Fantastic and fun piece of history! Yes it's an old restaurant but if you are a foodie, this place is perfect to try Austrian dishes with modern twists. Beautiful stylish interior! Would highly recommend first and foremost for people excited about unique food. It's more about that than the age of the building.
It’s not every day that you have the chance to dine in the world’s oldest restaurant that dates back to 803AD! And that’s this restaurant’s obvious claim to fame. You definitely need a reservation to dine here, so don’t think that you can just waltz in. There are 2 different experiences that I noticed here: the regular portion of the restaurant on the ground floor that has an old cellar feel, and the upstairs portion that has live music and concerts while you eat. We dined downstairs. The staff were lovely and our waiter was a nice and laid back guy cracking jokes from time to time and made us feel very welcomed and relaxed. The food was absolutely delicious - I ordered the Wiener schnitzel with the lingonberries and my wife ordered the veal tenderloin with the white asparagus. While I felt that my meal was adequate, my wife, though she liked the food, felt that her portion was lacking, especially considering that her meal was one of the more expensive options. And I would have to agree with her. She had 2 little tenderloins and only 2 asparagus! We had some white asparagus at a different restaurant about a week ago and they provided much more and honestly I found that they tasted much better than they did here. I felt bad for her and I ended up giving her some of my wiener schnitzel that way she didn’t leave hungry. If portions or pricing is adjusted, I would consider upping the review if we were to visit in the future, but for now that remains a small irk for us. We lastly ordered the Salzburger Nockerl for dessert and that was the highlight of our meal. If you haven’t tried it yet, it’s a must when in Salzburg! Overall, I’m very happy that I tried this place, but I view this as a one and done situation. Regardless, it’s worth trying so you can say that you dined in a 1200 year old restaurant.
St. Peter Stiftskulinarium is said to be the oldest restaurant in Europe, dating back to 803 AD. The setting is truly stunning and full of history, making it a memorable dining experience. We ordered Tafelspitz soup, wild garlic soup, Branzino, Wiener Schnitzel, lingonberries, and Salzburger Nockerl. Service was good overall, but you’re mainly paying for the historic atmosphere and location rather than the food, which was decent but felt a bit overpriced.
The food was good, the waitstaff was attentive if a bit pushy. The atmosphere was excellent. On Thursdays in the summer, they have live music. The bread was okay but required for dinner service, the schnitzel quite good and the veal very good. The nockerl was quite fluffy and well done. The main reason for this review was the added 20% at the end. Usually listed prices are required to include the tax already, so that was a bit unexpected. Overall: okay fine dining experience
St. Peter has been open and serving food since the year 803! This Salzburg Austria restaurant was amazing in every way! The bread with the salted caramel butter was surprising to the palate but not at all overly sweet—just perfect. I ordered the Coq au Vin, which was the best I’ve tasted. My husband ordered a tenderloin, which he declared to be incredible! The service was impeccable and the atmosphere was lovely. I would recommend St. Peters to anyone visiting Salzburg, and urge them to get a reservation ahead of time.
