Our first visit to Salzburg - this place was recommended by other visitors as well as a native Salzburger. Totally lived up to the reviews. Small place serving local dishes. Don’t miss the Wiener schnitzel or the dessert soufflée for two. Curated wine list - all well priced pair well with the food. Very nice wait staff, especially Evren who gave us with suggestions. Tips: reserve in advance. It’s not a big place. Expect that others may be seated with on a busy night you if you’re a party of two seated at a large table. Know that everything is made to order.

I had pre-booked a late lunch after reading many positive reviews. Even though I arrived about 30 minutes early, the server showed me to my table right away. I ordered the goulash soup and schnitzel for my mains, followed by an apple strudel for dessert. The goulash was the standout dish—rich, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. When it comes to service, I don’t mind whether the staff are particularly friendly or not; as long as they are polite, that’s perfectly fine for me. I actually prefer not to have overly attentive waiters checking on me constantly. When I’m eating, I simply want to enjoy the moment.

Deep fried chicken was a good choice after a long journey and tiring day. The size of the dish was huge and I was satisfied with everything on the table. The chicken was freshly deep fried, the crust was spicy and delicious, the meat was cooked well, tender and juicy. I loved the potatoes salad, the dressing was so good! Apple juice was also tasty and big size. The service was good quality from start to end, we didn’t wait for long but I recommend early reservation, it has a small but nice yard with some tables. Communication was great, service was faster than I expected, and the food was excellent. Highly recommended.

This restaurant is tucked away on a quieter street, off the main tourist path. Stepping inside, you immediately feel the historic charm of the space. The restaurant is spacious, spanning two floors, and thoughtfully decorated with a warm, cozy atmosphere. A delightful detail: look closely and you’ll spot charming bear decorations tucked into various corners—a playful nod to the restaurant’s name. The menu offers a nice variety of traditional Austrian dishes, and portions are generous. I tried the half Backhendl (breaded fried chicken), which was perfectly seasoned and delicious. The staff were professional and attentive throughout our visit. Restrooms are conveniently located on the ground floor. Overall, a great experience—well worth a visit if you’re looking for authentic Austrian cuisine in a traditional setting.

We enjoyed the dinner at Bärenwirt. I found this restaurant from Google which is not far from Salzburg Central Station (Salzburg Hauptbahnhof). Looking at the menu, it says "since 1663". I was curious and did some more search. I realised that this place has a very long history ! The building and site date back to the 1400s in the district of Mülln, which was one of the earliest suburbs of medieval Salzburg. It was said that in the year 1562, a bear had been washed up the river and this was how the name came abour. "Baren" (German word for bear is Bär“ and in plural is Bären) "wirt" (meaning innkeeper or person who runs a pub or restaurant). The inn was officially established later in 1663 by the Augustinian monks from the nearby monastery. I took buses from Salzburg Central Station here alighting at the bus stop also with the same name "Barenwirt". The building is part of the Benedictine Abbey of Michaelbeuern, which still owns it today. The restaurant is now run by Felleis & Knittelfelder hotel and restaurant group since 2018. We ordered Bärlauchsuppe (wild garlic soup), Haussulze (appetizer made from meat set in aspic or gelatine made from meat stock). The soup is creamy and rich in flavour. The Haussulze resembles a Teochew dish called Zhū jiǎo dòng, literally “pork knuckle jelly”. For the main dishes, the waiter recommended Backhendl (fried chicken) which is a specialty of Barenwirt (the word is also the restaurant's wifi password !) and the Barenwirt Schnitzel. Both dishes are deep fried to golden and crispy. I find the schnitzel quite special as the pork is filled with mushroom, ham and cheeze.
