Stayed at the mango tree for about four nights. It’s five minutes walk from the beach and it’s a very nice beach.. I had a private room. It was very convenient. I had air conditioning laying warm water in the shower and it was really quiet at night.. the problem I had with this Hostel is that I felt like a hotel. Very little social activities. There is no music in the bar. The bar was opening for a very few hours a day. The vibe was just retirement home not a hostel.. The price was very similar to a hotel but for me it’s really important to socialize and I felt like it was extremely difficult to create relationships. Overall, if you’re looking for a place with peace of mind right by the beach, this would be your place. Just don’t count on social activities.
Amazing hostel! The location is right in the heart of Ipanema, just a two-minute walk from the beach. The staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Nicola, in particular, welcomed us with open arms and gave us great advice on things to do around town. She was also very engaging and kind at the bar. We went to a football game with Rodrigo, who was equally wonderful—energetic, friendly, and an excellent guide before, during, and after the match.
location was great. place was clean. beds were comfy. & michelle & other staff were the BEST :) highly recommend for anyone solo traveling in Rio
I stayed at Mango Tree Hostel from February 18th to 22nd during Carnaval, and wanted to share my experience and address some of the problems in previous reviews as to help out as many people as possible. This will be a lengthy review as I will try to be as detailed as possible. This was my first time staying at a hostel. I travel frequently, both solo and with friends and typically I get a hotel or Airbnb. However, given the dates and events, a hostel was the most economical option. Let me start out by saying that your experience will be contingent on what your expectations are. Remember, this is a hostel a block away from one of the most famous beaches in the world, not a 5 star luxury hotel. I arrived around 2100 and was greeted by a very friendly receptionist (I'm terrible with names so I dont remember any). Before being led to my room, I immediately brought up a couple of concerns. I had accidentally booked the wrong departure day and was not able to fix it online, so I was worried I would have to change hostels on my last day, however we were able to get the stay extended with no problems. My second concern was actually from a previous review regarding theft. I asked about the locker system and was told I could purchase a lock for R20, which I did. You can always bring your own. This was a very easy fix that immediately took care of my concern. While on the topic of theft, if I have learned anything from my travels, it's to keep anything important on you at all times or keep it somewhere that you can secure/lock. Again, you're at a hostel that receives lots of visitors from all over the world coming in and out all the time so its best to try to keep track of your most important belongings as best as you can. I was then led to my room that I reserved, which was a 6 bunk room that I shared with other guests. I was lucky enough to have it be be right next to the bathroom and also next to a balcony. I was given two sheets, a blanket and a pillow case. Some of my bunk mates were there when I arrived and we made some small talk before going out to balcony to share a beer and a smoke. If you are looking to meet new people and make some friends, staying in a shared room is the best way to do it, plus its much cheaper than the individual room. The room itself was good given that it needed to fit 6 people. The bottom bunk was available when I arrived so I picked that one for easy in and out access. The room to the bunks is controlled by individual key card acess, which you receive, and then the room is split into two sections with a door to divide them. The bunk itself was surprisingly comfortable. Its smaller than a twin mattress but Im not a very big person so it was okay for me, but I can see how it may be an issues for taller people. Each bunk has a light, a wall plug in with light socket, USB and USB-c plug ins. The USBC did not work, but I had a charger. There is also one locker for each bunk. I went to bed shortly after since I had booked a tour early in the morning. Everyone was pretty good about respecting the rules for quiet hours. The next day, before I left for my tour, I took a shower in the bathroom facilities. The mens bathroom is inside the main building while the women's is outside in the patios, however I believe there were more bathrooms that I could not find. The bathrooms had one closed stall toilet, two showers, one curtain and one closed door and two sinks as well as an electronic hand dryer. The water temperature for the showers were fine. I recommend bringing your own towel, but you can purchase one at the front desk for R10 and trade it in for a new one when needed. I did not spend a whole lot of time at the hostel after this as I had planned activities with friends I made. There's a small bar in the dining area and I purchased one drink that was pretty good. People were friendly and approachable. There were also a lot of good activities planned by the hostel which I did not attend. Overall,I dont know what makes a 5star hostel, but this was pretty good all things given,I wouldstay again
Rooms are 12 bedroom dorms not 6 but because there is a door in between they advertise is as 6 even thought you have to walk through the dorm to get to your room. Very expensive and not worth the price. The only positive I have to say is that the location is good but I would say to look for somewhere further from the beach and you will get better value.
