Focused entirely on icelandic artists a ticket to the gallery also includes entry to the museum 10 minutes away. Fortunate to see so many Erró works in a single space as he's not widely circulated despite a prolific career still painting in his 90s.
The Reykjavik Art Museum is a good way to spend an hour or two. The museum has very interesting architecture and has a few exhibition rooms and showcases some of Icelands biggest artists including Erro which was a very interesting exhibit. Outside the museum is worth a wander too, with some pieces by the harbour. I visited on a public holiday last year and it was quiet which was a lovely experience.
I really loved the design of this museum: the attention to detail in the lighting, angles, and overall flow of the space is exceptional. It feels thoughtfully curated as a physical environment. That said, I connected less with the content itself, though of course art is always subjective. One downside is the ticketing system. They don’t offer single-entry tickets for just one museum, which can be limiting if you’re short on time. On the other hand, the option to purchase one ticket that grants access to three museums is a great value. Overall, it’s worth visiting for the architectural and spatial experience alone, even if the exhibitions themselves may not appeal to everyone.
Lovely gallery space and almost empty on a Sunday morning in mid September. 3 interesting exhibitions. The gallery is on 3 levels and ticket includes 2 other sites (not nearby)
A wonderful museum, with great temporary and permanent exhibitions. The Errò collection is amazing. A must see in Reykjavik.
