I stayed with my wife and my little son. The hotel is very nice and cosy. Excellent location and great service. I’d like to highlight the service provided by Javier Frechou at the front desk. He was always attentive to our requests, consistently proactive and incredibly kind and helpful. He is one of those people who genuinely make a hotel run better. His professionalism, warmth, and willingness to help made a real difference in our stay. Great experience.
I've been traveling back and forth to the East Village fairly frequently and the Freehand is in the rotation of places I stay depending on who's got the best room rate. I've stayed at the Freehand multiple times and the experience has been very consistent. First, the downsides: it's an old hotel which means the rooms are small and can feel a little claustrophobic. The bathrooms are particularly cramped but this is a problem to some degree or another at every old hotel I've been to so I can't fault the Freehand too much for this. Second, it's in a busy part of town and depending on where your room is there can be a fair amount of noise from outside. It doesn't bother me but it's something to be aware of. I'd dock it half a star for these things but you apparently can't do that. On the positive side, the rooms are comfortable, the decor is warm, inviting, and interesting enough that it doesn't feel like a soulness corporate hotel. The little café in the lobby is a nice quick breakfast option. The mezzanine bar is expensive but the drinks are nice and the pours are heavy so I can't complain too much; it's lower Manhattan after all. The service is really the star; everyone is very warm, friendly, and accommodating. I'd rate this place absolutely on par with a lot of the other 4 star hotels in NYC I've stayed at. It's not the best but it's very consistent and in a good location. If you can get a room here at a good price it's absolutely worth staying here.
Excellent hotel. Beautiful architecture, café on-site, clean, friendly and well- laid out. Cons are the rooms are small but for a traveler or two who will be mostly out exploring, it's perfect. It's in an excellent location where you can step outside and walk to the tourist locations. No laundry machines on-site and no free breakfast, so it's a simple lodging. But it hits the important details; clean, safe and perfect location.
the rooms and the building in general have very low ceilings. this makes it feel like you’re staying on a boat or something. i didn’t like that chlosterphobic feeling. there’s also no coffee in the room and not even a drinking glass. i had to ask for a plastic cup from patsy’s if you’re busy and just need a place to rest then it is serviceable. i liked the tv right at the foot of the bed. i wouldn’t stay again, though that’s nothing to do with staff which are so friendly
We just checked out of our five night trip at Freehand, and as someone who does a lot of hotel research before a trip, I want to share our honest thoughts! I’ve scrolled through a lot of recent reviews about the room being small/noisy/etc, and I think we did a few things right that led to us having a good experience: First, we booked directly through the website rather than Expedia, which is definitely the way to go. They have coupon codes too if you give them your email. Second, we booked a queen room (not the solo, which lots of people seem to have problems with). The bed maybe wasn’t the biggest queen ever but it seemed bigger than a full. We also got a room with a decent view and lots of light. I wouldn’t say it was noisy, but I did expect it to sound like NYC and being on the 9th floor probably helped. We didn’t have cold water sometimes, but we didn’t mind that too much. The space is small, but I think it’s well utilized, and I appreciated the stools/furniture/desk for what they offered. Overall I had a good experience! They also let us check in early at 11:30 which was lifesaving on that first day, and that was after they had already stored our luggage for us. I’d come again!
