Established 1718 / America's Oldest Continuously Active Catholic Cathedral Community. This is the 3rd cathedral built on this sight. I see online they offer a tour - I would love to learn more. Beautiful, no indoor plumbing- yet! I was told 2 years of renovations start this summer. We attended the mass in this beautiful historic cathedral.

Do not come at noontime when Mass is starting or being held. We ventured back around later and was able to respectfully visit inside. Lit a candle for remembrance. Explored the artifacts, including a copy of an illuminated bible. Beautiful church with lots of sacred art; so glad we stopped in despite the challenges of parking and construction (spring 2026). A small gift shop is available.

A stunning landmark in the heart of the French Quarter, the St. Louis Cathedral is both historically rich and beautifully maintained. Open to the public during regular hours, it is fully accessible and welcoming to all visitors. The architecture is breathtaking, and a peaceful interior offers a quiet moment away from the bustle of Jackson Square. Whether you are drawn by faith, history, or aesthetics, it is worth stepping inside. The surrounding area is lively, with street performers and artists just outside, but the cathedral itself remains serene. It is a must-see for anyone exploring New Orleans.

Beautiful cathedral in Jackson square. Before heading in be sure to read a quick wiki entry on St. Louis. He is featured heavily on the stained glass (which was beautiful). Cute book store as you enter. They offer tours or you can quietly explore the sanctuary in your own.

Visiting the St. Louis Cathedral was such a peaceful and grounding experience. The cathedral itself is beautifully built, with stunning architecture that immediately captures your attention. We went on a weekday, and it was incredibly serene and calm inside—a quiet escape from the busy energy of the city. Spending time there brought a real sense of peace and stillness, which made it even more special. I do wish we had been able to attend a mass, but unfortunately the timing didn’t work out. Still, just being there and soaking in the atmosphere was truly meaningful. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in New Orleans.
