Extremely poor service and even worse food safety standards. I heard how Domilise’s was a must-try piece of New Orleans po-boy history, so a friend and I decided to stop in on a Tuesday afternoon to see what the hype was all about. I walked in to find the place packed with people. Every seat taken. I placed my order with an older woman. As soon as she finished taking my order, she let out an exhausted sigh, said “I can’t take any more orders.” to herself, and walked away from a line of people waiting to order to continue doing whatever she was doing in the kitchen area. She let this line of people wait and grow for another 30 minutes before she finally returned to take orders. I know this because it literally took an hour for me to get one hot smoked sausage po-boy. I watched several people walk in and walk right out when they saw the scene because they seemed to have seen this show before. I even watched a gentleman cancel his entire order after becoming fed up with the wait. The older woman working didn’t seem to know how to refund him his money either. After I placed my order, I stood around and began to notice that everyone in the establishment was waiting for food. This is when I knew the decision to try Domilise’s was a mistake. 3 people behind the counter working with zero sense of urgency. All of them handling everyone’s food with their bare hands. I watched the main cook, a young gentleman, running orders outside touching the door handles and whatever else without any consideration for cross contamination or the thought to wash his hands even once. Pretty disgusting. I waited an hour to receive a very underwhelming sandwich. In addition to the hot smoked sausage, I tried the oyster po-boy which had a low quality fishy flavor to it. My friend was given the wrong sandwich, which he didn’t realize until he bit into it, and the woman who called out his order had the nerve to give him an attitude about it, even though she couldn’t get it right after having a literal hour to do so. I could have run this place better and faster myself. I just could not understand how the staff could be so slow, oblivious, and inconsiderate. Apparently, this place has been around for 100 years. How? I have no idea. I guess when customers don’t know any better, you get away with a lot. I’d be embarrassed to call myself the owner of a place like this. Do yourself a favor and avoid this place at all costs. A visit to Acme Oyster House restored my faith in the New Orleans po-boy.

Had an opportunity to visit a Po'Boy institution, and boy was I impressed! No frills, I got a half-n-half (fried shrimp / fried oysters), and I enjoyed the fried oysters pboy over the other. It [oyster] was much crunchier, with a pleasant chew on the inside. It paired well with the softness of the bread, and the works. The place has lots of memorabilia on the walls and such, would recommend spending time wall watching around the place.

TLDR: A classic New Orleans spot serving some of the best po-boys in the city. Worth the wait every single time. Domilise’s Po-Boys & Bar is a true New Orleans staple that’s been serving incredible po-boys for generations. Featured by legends like Anthony Bourdain and Emeril Lagasse, and most recently recognized with a Bib Gourmand by the Michelin Guide, Domilise’s is the definition of an institution. I stopped in for lunch on a Saturday, and as expected, the line was out the door with about a 30 minute wait for pickup. The staff let us know they were short handed, but we were more than happy to wait, and it was absolutely worth it. The inside is your classic hole in the wall sandwich joint, which I love. There are a couple of two top tables, some counter space, and a few outdoor seats if you want to stay and eat. The kitchen is right in front of you, so while you wait you can watch the team prepping sandwiches and slicing up those famous 8 foot loaves of French bread. We ordered one large shrimp and one large oyster po boy, both fully dressed with lettuce, tomato, and remoulade for the full experience. Both sandwiches were outstanding and lived up to every bit of the hype. The bread had that perfect balance of being crispy on the outside and soft and pillowy on the inside. The shrimp and oysters were fried perfectly with a flavorful batter that complemented the tangy remoulade beautifully. Every bite was loaded with generous portions of seafood. If I had to pick a favorite, the shrimp po boy edges out the oyster by just a bit, but honestly you can’t go wrong either way. Domilise’s is a must visit when in New Orleans.

Domilise’s is the real deal. It’s a bit of a hike from the tourist traps, but the food is incredible and well worth the trek. Just a heads up it stays busy, so expect a wait. Pro tip don’t use the corner door. That’s where people exit after picking up their order. Use the side entrance in the middle of the building to get in line and order. The food was worth the wait! We got the beef & swiss. Also got the shrimp and fries.

This was our first stop after arriving for our NOLA vacation. I loved the women that served us! Reminded me of my mom! I got the shrimp, beef, cheddar, lettuce, pickle, mayo po boy and it was my first po boy! Wow! It was scrumptious! The fries were piping hot and perfect for scooping up what fell out of the sammich. Get a stack of napkins cuz po boys is messy! Haha
