Had a girls dinner date and everything was just lovely. Great welcome from the reception and we were seated well. Absolutely delicious meals (I had lemon grilled chicken) and their wine list was superb. The grounds are beautiful and to top it all was the commendable service we got from Dola and Jeff. They absolutely spoilt us.
Sad to say it was a bit of a let down. The place was recommended and the rave was about the food. That was correct, the food was great. The sad part was the service or lack of. There was no communication and people were not around only serving the food and leaving no explanation or enjoy your meal. The only person who had any hospitality was Nancy a trainee. Sad to say, that really put a damper on the whole experience.
Went there for a dinner date and was particularly impressed by the food as well as the service. Although we could tell the waiter was quite busy with many guests, she was still very friendly and welcoming towards us. They also managed to do a surprise cake I had planned quite perfectly. The food was pretty good and the portions decent for the price point I think it is relatively worth it. The only drawback was the atmosphere which was majorly non existent where we were seated. We were in the inside seating area which didn’t have any music so bar the conversations of guests it was relatively quiet. The ambience however was beautiful at night with the lights as well as natural vegetation. Overall it is a value-for-money restaurant and I do recommend it.
We visited About Thyme from around 3pm on Friday. When we arrived, the atmosphere was very relaxed and comfortable, and we were able to enjoy conversation without any noise or pressure. The food was good. Stand-out dishes were the teriyaki duck, the moussaka and the ribs. The pepper steak, however, was only average. It was not particularly appetising visually and could benefit from better presentation and concept. The vegetables added little to the dish and felt more like an afterthought. A few items on the menu were also unavailable at the time. Portion sizes were good, though slightly on the lighter side for those looking for a more filling meal. The daytime set-up of the restaurant is nice. There is a garden area with grass, although it is designated as a smoking area rather than a seating space. The seating is in the wooden deck area, bar area and lower deck (I’ll include a photo). In the evening, when the lights come on, the ambience improves significantly and feels much more vibrant and atmospheric. Our main challenge was the service. Our waiter was not very attentive and, as the evening became busier, it became increasingly difficult to get assistance. We regularly had to walk towards the bar or kitchen to look for a waiter. Having to repeatedly ask for our server was frustrating. A better system for managing tables was needed. During peak time, it was especially hard to locate our waiter. By the evening, the restaurant became very busy and quite loud, we could tell it is a popular Friday night spot. It is ideal for after-work drinks or a casual night out with friends. However, it is not particularly suitable for a quiet, romantic dinner or a family birthday celebration as you cant hear each other very well. The price point for the food, compared to other restaurants in Nairobi, is okay. Overall, we still had a good time and I would return – especially to try their well-known sticky date pudding.
It’s been quite a while since I was here. Found some pleasant changes - the bar! The service was just as I remembered it back then - superb! We were served by Mary and she was patient with us and very friendly. The garden can get cold in the evenings but they do have those portable charcoal heaters, just ask for one if you’re cold. I’ll definitely be coming back!
