Mutrah Hotel is a classic old-Muscat budget hotel where the real value lies in its location and atmosphere rather than luxury facilities. After reviewing overall guest sentiment on Google Maps and recurring review patterns, the hotel seems especially popular among travellers seeking affordable accommodation near Mutrah Souq, Mutrah Corniche, and the historic centre of Muscat. The most commonly noted advantage by guests is the hotel’s close proximity to Mutrah attractions. Many visitors appreciate being able to walk to the Corniche, explore traditional souqs, enjoy the seaside atmosphere, and experience the older cultural side of Muscat without needing long drives or costly transport. Review trends suggest the hotel performs best for: • Budget-conscious travellers • Backpackers and solo visitors • Short city visits • Guests focused on sightseeing rather than luxury • Those seeking easy access to Mutrah Souq and Old Muscat Repeated positive themes include: • Excellent location near Mutrah Corniche • Friendly and helpful staff • Affordable rates for central Muscat • Quiet atmosphere at certain times • Easy access to local restaurants and shops However, guest feedback also highlights some realistic considerations before booking: • The hotel is older and visibly aged • Rooms and bathrooms may feel basic • Maintenance and cleanliness issues are sometimes reported • Facilities are limited compared to modern hotels • Parking and traffic around the hotel can sometimes be inconvenient Emotionally, staying here feels less like a polished resort experience and more like stepping into the slower rhythm of traditional Muscat life. Early mornings around Mutrah, the sound of the sea nearby, evening walks along the Corniche, and the mountain-lined streets create an atmosphere many travellers remember long after their visit. For those searching for: “Affordable hotel near Mutrah Souq,” “Budget hotel in Old Muscat,” “Cheap stay near Mutrah Corniche,” or “Simple accommodation in Muscat Oman,” Mutrah Hotel remains a practical choice if expectations are aligned with its price range. Best advice before booking: • Suitable for short stays and city exploration • Best for travellers prioritising location over luxury • Request upgraded rooms if available • A good base for exploring Mutrah and Old Muscat on foot • Moderate expectations regarding modern amenities Overall, Mutrah Hotel continues to offer practical value in one of Muscat’s most culturally rich and scenic districts. While it may not provide a luxury hotel experience, its affordability, central location, and authentic connection to Mutrah’s character make it attractive for travellers wishing to experience the traditional side of Oman capital.

I rarely leave bad reviews, and it is with a heavy heart that I write this one. Mutrah Hotel used to be a cherished childhood memory. I stayed here many times with my parents from the 1980s until the early 2000s. Sadly, it is almost unrecognisable today. The renovated lobby and the proudly displayed high booking ratings are misleading. The renovation stops there. The hotel has effectively become a nightclub hotel. Loud music plays every night, including weekdays, until around 3 am. We were the only foreigners and needless to say, the only guests with children. Parking is taken over by the nightclub, and we repeatedly encountered drunk people and very scantily dressed women outside. The rooms are extremely outdated and poorly maintained. Bathrooms have mould, water leaking onto the floor, dirty sinks and loose tiles. Curtains were falling off the rails, towels were stained and frayed (only two for four people), and only two small bottles of water were provided for a family. The air-conditioning units are very old and clearly not cleaned. Breakfast was almost non-existent: vacuum-packed croissants, toast, butter, processed cheese, no jam, and barely any fruit. After the first night, we complained about the lack of hot water and the nightclub noise. We were moved to another room in a separate building, which required walking through the hotel’s ground floor, past the kitchens, cleaning equipment and even a liquor store (!). Very strange for a hotel. Wi-Fi works if you are lucky. Separate passwords are given for each device, they expire after 24 hours, and we had to go back to reception several times just to get one connection working. Our room was never cleaned despite our request. The most disappointing part was the attitude at reception. Oman is a country dear to my heart and known for its hospitality, but the reception staff here showed little interest in helping. Every issue was met with “five minutes,” and nothing ever followed. The only reason I give 1 star instead of zero is one kind housekeeper who genuinely did his best and showed real professionalism. This was my last stay at Mutrah Hotel and a very sad way to see a place full of childhood memories lose its soul.

Housekeeping knocked aggressively and tried to open the door around 8 am while I was still sleeping. Very unprofessional and disturbing. I called the reception. The receptionist lady also tried to come to my room at 8 am. I paid for privacy until 12 pm. Their behavior is very unprofessional.

One of the oldest hotels in Muscat. Situated right in the heart of the city.
