The city's oldest museum, beautifully restored to showcase 19th-century decorative arts, clay models, and historic maps.

Worth every penny. The interiors were absolutely mesmerizing, and I was truly awestruck by the overall ambiance and presentation. The museum has an impressive collection of coins, ancient weapons used in India, and beautifully crafted miniature villages representing various tribes and communities. There were also many artifacts from ancient India on display, including plates, soap stands, utensils, and several other historical items. The collection is vast and well maintained, making it a fascinating place to explore for anyone interested in history and culture.

The Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum, located within the verdant enclave of the Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan (Byculla Zoo), is Mumbai’s oldest museum and a masterpiece of Victorian design. Opened to the public in 1872 as the Victoria and Albert Museum, it was originally conceived to showcase the industrial arts and the rich cultural heritage of the Bombay Presidency. The building itself is an architectural treasure, featuring a stunning Palladian exterior and an opulent interior characterized by intricate Minton tile floors, gilded pillars, and an ornate ceiling. Following an extensive restoration in the early 2000s, it became a cultural beacon, winning the prestigious UNESCO Award of Excellence for heritage conservation. The museum’s collection offers a meticulous historical narrative of Mumbai’s evolution from a cluster of seven islands into a bustling colonial metropolis. The galleries house an extraordinary array of clay models, dioramas, and maps that illustrate the city’s early social life, traditional costumes, and diverse communities. One of the most famous exhibits is the massive basalt elephant sculpture, dating back to the 6th century, which was originally found on Elephanta Island and moved to the museum grounds in the 1860s. These artifacts provide a rare, tangible link to the craftsmanship and daily rhythms of a bygone era, making it an essential destination for history enthusiasts. Situated amidst the lush botanical gardens of the zoo, the museum serves as a serene cultural sanctuary away from the city's modern chaos. It frequently hosts contemporary art exhibitions, educational workshops, and film screenings, bridging the gap between historical preservation and modern artistic expression. The surrounding plaza and the nearby David Sasoon Clock Tower add to the nineteenth-century charm of the precinct. By integrating the natural beauty of the Byculla Zoo with its high-Victorian grandeur, the Dr. Bhau Daji Lad Museum remains a vital institution that celebrates the artistic soul and the complex, multifaceted history of Mumbai.

Very nice museum to spend 1 hour. The beautiful architecture is its highlight. Its well maintained from inside. The ticket price is very cheap for Indians. Ground floor has artifacts and top floor has varied cultural depictions. The guided tour we were told was not available. There were QR codes on the artifacts which tou can scan and listen. There was parking space inside for 4 wheelers. There was some exhibitions of paitings from Karnataka going on behind the main building. Overall 5 stars as its worth the price. There are many things they can improve like the toilets, canteen and some more artifacts on the top floor. The descriptions of the artifacts need to be improved. Some of them are in Hindi or Marathi only and not in English.

Had a great experience visiting Veermata Jijabai Bhosale Udyan and Zoo. The zoo is clean, well-maintained, and full of greenery. The animals are well cared for, and the overall atmosphere is peaceful and enjoyable. A wonderful place for families, children, and nature lovers. Definitely worth a visit in Mumbai.
