Templo Mayor is an unforgettable experience and one of the most impressive historic sites in Mexico City. Walking through the ruins right in the heart of Centro Histórico feels surreal — you’re surrounded by modern buildings, yet standing inside the remains of the Aztec capital. The layout is easy to follow, and the signage gives just enough context without overwhelming you. The museum is excellent and beautifully curated, with artifacts that bring the entire site to life. Seeing the ruins from street level is one thing, but walking the actual pathways and then exploring the museum gives you a completely different appreciation for the history. The location is perfect, right beside the Metropolitan Cathedral, and the entrance on Calle Seminario is straightforward once you know where to go. The entire visit felt organized, calm, and incredibly meaningful. A must‑see for anyone visiting Mexico City.

Museo de Templo Mayor was by far one of the biggest highlights from my two weeks in Mexico City and the surrounding sites. This place is unlike any other museum in CDMX. The old Aztec ruins that were discovered here show the true breadth of history Mexico City has. The energy here is potent and powerful. Tune in and see what you feel for yourself. I thought this museum was leagues above and beyond the Anthropology Museum. If you want to go to one historical museum in CDMX - make it this one hands down.

Visted in May 2026. Do you like Aztec/Mesoamerica history, architecture, or archeology? If so, this place is a must visit. Truly reveals the layered story of the Aztec civilization and how it's buried beneath the modern city. Alot of cool artifacts, intriguing exhibits for all ages. If you read all the signage, it takes about 1 hour to really absorb everything.

Templo Mayor is one of the most fascinating archaeological sites in Mexico City and offers an incredible glimpse into the heart of the ancient Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan. Located right next to the Metropolitan Cathedral in the historic center, the site reveals the remains of the main temple that once stood at the center of the Aztec world. Walking through the ruins, it is amazing to see how layers of history have been uncovered, with different stages of the temple’s construction visible as the Aztec empire expanded. Informational displays help visitors understand the religious and cultural importance of the temple, which was dedicated primarily to the gods Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc. The adjacent museum is also excellent, displaying many artifacts discovered during excavations, including sculptures, ceremonial objects, and offerings that tell the story of Aztec life and beliefs. Visiting Templo Mayor provides a powerful contrast between ancient and modern Mexico, as the ruins stand surrounded by the busy streets and historic buildings of downtown Mexico City.

Very interesting place from a historical standpoint. The temple structure is largely destroyed unfortunately, and it’s clear that ground settlement is taking a further toll. But it is cool that you can walk over/around it (on sidewalks with railing), unlike some other sites. The indoor portion of the museum is quite interesting, you could probably spend 1 - 1.5 hours there and cover it well. It’s basically designed with a routed layout where you can walk through and cover everything in order, which I found helpful. If I had to choose, I would choose Anthropology Museum over Templo Mayor, but hopefully you have time for both.
