Food brings us together and Maximo certainly accomplishes that! The airy space with large tapestries adorning the walls and a giant tree in the dining room, large pillar candles for light in the evenings, and a welcoming staff that is attentive but not overbearing. They managed the balance of creating artwork out of foo without being pretentious and stuffy. I was feeling lightheaded when we arrived for our late lunch-early dinner reservation at 3:30pm, maybe because I need to eat something or because we were inhaling too much fumes from the traffic on the way there, but once we were seated I felt so much better. The ambiance is serene and calm and the staff had the relaxed attitude to match. We opted for the tasting menu and it was absolutely the right call. We got to try so many tasty bites such as beet tartlet and caviar, lobster “aguachile,” smoked fish dashi, duck and ricotta cheese ravioli, wagyu beef, lamb rack, and for dessert, blueberry sorbet with grapefruit and cardamon, plus chocolate soufflé tart paired with olive oil ice cream. A persona highlight was the escamoles with caviar and comté cheese, because woah it’s egg larvae and it tastes oddly nutty and has mouthfeel and makes a pop like caviar? Strange if you think too hard on it but definitely worth a try, it’s delicious! This tasting menu was thorough and we ate and laughed and were merry for over three hours. They never made us feel rushed and coursed out the meal when they noticed us slowing down. Epitome of leisure and an experience only in the great ciudad de Mexico. Thank you for a lovely and memorable evening, team Máximo!
Had a disappointing experience at Maximo last night. We had reservations at 9pm and we're only seated at 945pm. We set at the back table for another 20 minutes with nobody coming to us offering water, or menus. My husband had to ask a passing by waitstaff for a menu. After getting a menu, our waiter said that the dishes we ordered are sharable, which none were at all. We wanted to try their ribeye (from a huge display at the entrance full of different cuts), however waiter said they were out of ribeye and burger. What? how is that? So he pushed to offer tenderloin. Its strange that the restaurant of that caliber is out of main menu offerings. The food was actually tasty, we tried steak tartar, porchini mushrooms special, braised beef tongue and pasta parpadelle, but none of them portions were sharable at all. My husband asked for plain ice twice and never got it. The chairs were not comfortable, but promised cushions never arrived. Another staff member almost burned my friends shirt by accidental fall of a very tall candle, and the manager nor our waiter never came by to apologize or check on him. Again, very disappointed and honestly would never be back nor recommend. This is one of the examples of overhyped restaurants with mediocre service, which should be as important as the food they serve.
Ordered the tasting menu and it was good overall. The wagyu steak and the sorbet ice cream were amazing. The lobster and caviar in toastada were fresh and tasted good. The white fish was very soft and cooked well. The abalone in the soup was great as well, not hard at all and soft to chew. All the ingredients tasted super fresh and high quality. My favourite was the roasted eggplant dip (not part of tasting menu).
An absolutely delightful experience dining at Maximo. The food and ambiance were fantastic However, the thing that stood out the most to us was the level of service they provided. We will definitely be visiting every time we are in Mexico City and speaking about the restaurant to all our peers. We do recommend trying the following menu items: our absolute favourite flavours and textures we found in 1) the Taglietelle oxtail beef ragout and 2) a dessert item - the tarte Tatin. (Both in photos)
We went with my husband and really liked the atmosphere. The starter was very good, and so was the bread. I think we should have ordered dishes from the menu because they offered us daily specials that were not listed, and it ended up being extremely expensive. They weren’t anything special, some pasta with lobster that was a bit too salty and very overpriced for the quality. The service was very good. We didn’t leave very happy, unlike other places where you walk out feeling like you’ve had a real experience, even while spending less.
