Nice restaurant in chinatown and very busy even in late night. Looks like it is pretty well known restaurant. So many items on the menu. We ordered plenty dishes and food was ready pretty quickly. All the dishes are yummy. We left with tummy satisfied and full. As tips are not common, it is interesting to see the worker surprised and happy when we pave them the change.
Shanghai Street has the decor of a typical Chinese fast-food chain — very much like your average Chinatown Shanghainese diner. It’s always bustling and busy, with queues forming out the front. Be prepared to wait in the extractor fumes from the kitchen — the smell can really cling to your clothes and hair. There’s a front window where you can watch the ladies hand-making all types fresh dumplings. Inside, it’s noisy and lively. The food was great and tasted authentic. The xiaolongbao had thin pastry, and you could tell they were freshly made. People don’t just come for the dumplings — the other dishes are just as good. We ordered the beef stir-fried with oyster mushrooms and choi sum with garlic, and everything tasted fresh and well prepared. The place could definitely use a lick of paint and some renovation, especially the toilets, to freshen it up. We visited for dinner and waited about 10–15 minutes in the queue, and ordered while we wait. Service is efficient and straightforward — sit down, get served, enjoy your meal, and off you go.
We definitely ordered too much for two people 😅 But honestly, everything was so good — no regrets. This is a spot my son used to go to all the time when he lived in Melbourne. Portions are generous, so order wisely! If you’re not sure what to get, just go with the Top 10 recommendations on the first page of the menu — you can’t go wrong 👍
Food was amazing, service was quick and well prepared. staff were friendly and understanding despite the large crowd. Definitely worth coming, you can't miss this restaurant especially when you see all the chefs making dumplings.
The real challenge of Shanghai Street is that as a solo diner you cannot hope to order all that you want to and must prioritize carefully to hit the high points. Pan fried dumplings, glutinous rice shui mai and dandan noodles are indeed high points (not the only ones but all I could hope to do justice to!). It’s popular and there is a line, but they are efficient and know how to hustle the crowds through. Tasty, authentic food, good presentation and solid service.
