I have stayed at Silver Lake Pool & Inn three times now. My first two visits were solo trips of one or two nights, and I had such a positive experience that I returned recently with my husband for a week-long stay while visiting our son who lives nearby. Unfortunately, this stay was dramatically different from my previous visits. One of the biggest issues, and a gross lack of transparency, was that the restaurant was closed for 4 days, including the weekend, due to a purported private event. We received no advance notice, even upon check-in, and the hotel only informed us by leaving a note in our room. After the first night, the event itself never appeared to take place. Given that the restaurant is one of the property’s key amenities, this was extremely disappointing. When my husband asked where we were supposed to eat breakfast, we were told to try Erewhon next door, one of the most expensive markets in the country. It came across as a surprisingly dismissive response. To the management’s credit, they ultimately credited us for the inconvenience, which was appreciated, but I would have much preferred to have been forewarned and allowed to make an informed decision of whether or not to stay, before arriving. The front desk experience was also underwhelming. Staff members were frequently focused on their phones or hidden behind a computer screen. Rarely greeted guests unless greeted first. Level of hospitality was noticeably lacking and a stark contrast to my earlier stays. The hotel does communicate via text and asks how your stay is going. The hotel itself is noisy. Street noise is constant and feels very close. The room would shake as trucks passed by and the windows could benefit from better soundproofing. The walls and ceilings are also extremely thin. One morning, around 5:45 a.m., we were awakened by someone jumping rope in the room above us. We wanted to call the front desk immediately, only to discover no one was there until 6:00 a.m. Another frustrating experience occurred when we returned to the hotel around 11:15 p.m. and found both the valet and the front desk closed. We eventually found a security guard who told us that both services end at 11:00 p.m. This had never been communicated to us. We had to park several blocks away. The room itself felt stripped down compared with my earlier stays. Previous rooms felt bigger, fresher, thoughtfully equipped, and comfortable. This room had the bare minimum: a very small closet with only a few hangers, no desk/table, and no add’l storage. Add’l hangers were delivered promptly when requested, but I had to ask for a desk on two consecutive days before receiving one, and the desk that arrived was quite worn. The bathroom was similarly lacking in functionality. No bench, shelf, or stand to place toiletries or clothing while showering, and the robe hooks were too small to hold the robes. Towel quantities also felt inadequate: two bath towels, one hand towel, one white washcloth, and one black washcloth for two adult guests. To be fair, housekeeping kept the room clean, but daily service is provided only upon request. The standout employee is Carlos, one of the valet parking attendants. He is consistently friendly, efficient, remembered me from prior stays, and provided the kind of hospitality guests should expect throughout the property. Shout out to Carlos. Given how much I enjoyed my first two stays, this experience was especially disappointing. The location remains excellent, and Carlos exemplifies the kind of hospitality guests should expect throughout the property. Unfortunately, for the rates charged, the overall experience fell well short of expectations. My previous visits were short solo stays, and perhaps that is where this property performs best. For a longer stay with two guests, however, the shortcomings became impossible to ignore. Between the restaurant closure, lack of communication, noise issues, inconsistent service, and sparse room amenities, the hotel felt significantly overpriced for what it delivers.
I would not recommend staying here. I spent a full week at Silver Lake Hotel & Pool and experienced repeated service issues from start to finish. The property feels like a glorified motel with some “cute” design elements added to justify an inflated price tag — but the service and overall experience do not match the cost. I arrived around 10:00 PM and couldn’t immediately tell where the entrance was. After calling the hotel, a man came down and opened the gate but did not greet me or acknowledge me in any way. I even asked, “Is this the Silver Lake Hotel?” and received no response. I had to call the front desk again just to confirm I was in the right place. The same man answered and said, “I’ll come back down.” Whaat?!! There was no welcome, no assistance with bags up the stairs, and no basic hospitality!! At check-in, I was told that the card used to book my stay had been declined. When I asked which card they had on file, they mentioned a random Visa that I do not own. This was extremely concerning and confusing. Throughout the week, I was told housekeeping was by request only, which is fine, however, even after requesting daily service, it still did not happen. Overall, the experience was baffling and disappointing. The service was consistently poor, and for the price point, I expected a much higher standard of professionalism and hospitality.
One star for the pool and one for the restaurant (which was closed the entire time I visited but had a great endive Caesar). This hotel came highly recommended which is probably what made our stay here so disappointing. The room was oddly configured: the sink was located outside the bathroom and the bathroom had a gappy sliding door that served little-to-no purpose. Shower pressure: nonexistent. Closet: awkward and not full-length. No drawers, no luggage rack, no desk. I was asked upon check-in if I’d like housekeeping everyday (enthusiastically, “yes, please!”) -they came once at 5pm when I was dressing for dinner. My husband made a comment and was told “you have to ask for it 4 hours ahead”. I received a text only after checking in that the restaurant would be closed all week. Despite there being a nespresso in the room there was no coffee. Any effort to apologize for this or say “hey, we’re not at our best right now” would have been SO appreciated. I just received the bill and there were charges to the restaurant made after we left 😬. Front desk is taking care of it but honestly no part of this felt four star.
Silverlake Pool & Inn is our Neighborhood spot. We’ve experienced this venue for brunch, dinner, and many special occasions. The staff is always attentive and friendly. We see Jeffrey here often and he goes out of his way to make us feel at home and is always one of the kindest souls. This is one of the city’s hidden gems.
We stayed at Silver Lake Pool & Inn and really enjoyed our time. It was a short visit but a nice experience. The room was spacious, the cocktails at the restaurant were delicious and our bartender was so nice. We were taken care of by America at the front with check in and check out and she was so lovely and super helpful the couple of times I called the front desk with questions. We will most definitely be back and recommend this hotel to our friends!
