The Proper Hotel was absolutely superb! The hotel was amazing and had wonderful character and history. The staff (particularly Vanessa) was outstanding— super friendly and responsive. She even showed us the architecturally unique Pool and Basketball suites on a private tour. The Cara Cara restaurant was gorgeous and the food was delicious. Rooftop restaurant and pool were highlights! Great location in DTLA. Highly recommended and we’ll be back!

Here you feel at home and a little like a movie star. It's a very atmospheric hotel with beautiful design, a cozy atmosphere, and great energy. I'd especially like to mention the staff—friendly, attentive, and always ready to help. It feels like they're genuinely happy to have you here, not just doing their job. The hotel's true gem is the rooftop restaurant. It offers stunning views of Downtown Los Angeles, a great atmosphere, and the perfect spot to watch the sunset with a cocktail. Honestly, after a few minutes up there, you start to wonder if it's even worth going back down to your room. If you're looking for a stylish, cozy, and truly welcoming hotel in downtown Los Angeles, this is a great choice. Just be careful: after a stay here, you might find your own home lacking in atmosphere.

It's a solid option but definitely not qualified to be a 5 star hotel. The service is not that level . No turn down or thoughtful extras. Rooms are very small. I was alone and it was fine but I would not have been comfortable sharing the room with one other person. Gym is not lux , super basic with limited equipment. Food was good but I'd rather stay elsewhere and go eat there one evening.

If ever a hotel prioritized aesthetics over hospitality, this is it. It’s a lounge masquerading as lodging. The rooms are well-designed yet ridiculously small. You're greeted by cool art but paired with a garish display of overpriced chips and candy. The mini-fridge comes fully stocked with their inventory, zero space for your own water bottle. No ice machine either. You gotta wait on staff for that. The staff fortunately are pleasant and polite. It baffles me how this hotel is rated 5-stars when it’s quietly designed to be hostile to its guests.

Wonderful! My wife and I had a lovely time at this hotel in the heart of downtown LA. I think a lot of the negative reviews are people who've never lived in a city in their life. Yes, it's in a grungy part of town, and yes the rooms are relatively small...but for an old-city hotel building they're quite modern and up-to-date with amenities that make the size negligible. The goal of this hotel (for us anyways) is to be a guaranteed comfortable spot to both drop off our car and have a lovely space to sleep. It does it all in spades! Now the cuisine, also top notch. Along with the overall decor, theming, and service, this hotel truly strives to be a 5 Star experience regardless of it's surroundings. We also visited with our 2 mini-dachshunds who were well received! There is some turf and dirt patches on the hotel's block for them to do business. If you've got a big dog, I'd suggest purchasing the "dog welcome package" which includes a large bed...we did this for both our mini-dachshunds, but one bed could easily fit both of them (they also prefer their travel crates). I wouldn't purchase it again, but they did enjoy the dog treat that came with the bed! Also a couple water bowls were included as well. Someone in the reviews said that valet parking was included in their stay, that is not true and I did not see that option listed anywhere when booking. Valet parking (at the time of writing this review) was $65 per night, but that's worth it for peace-of-mind. Going back to the room: Sound insulation was great, the views were great, it's dark and doesn't necessarily need an eye-mask for sleep, and the bathroom was very lovely. We didn't check out the restaurant or bar because we came to explore local food and drink spots in the LA area, they also looked too pricey for what you get in return. For the adventuring city-type who enjoys having a lux safe haven at the beginning & end of their day, this is the spot! We'll definitely be coming back for another LA adventure the next time we're in the area...along with our dogs.
