My recent stay at SOWAKA was truly unforgettable. From the moment we arrived, Wendy warmly welcomed my fiancé and me through the beautiful garden entrance. Although we arrived at 9 AM, the staff happily stored our luggage and offered refreshing drinks and snacks while we waited. As a Hilton Diamond member, breakfast was included, and I highly recommend the traditional Japanese breakfast. After a full day exploring Kyoto, we returned to find that we had been upgraded to Room 208. Our luggage, fruit, and snacks were already waiting for us, and the peaceful garden view paired with soft Zen music created the perfect atmosphere. The hospitality was exceptional throughout our stay. Wendy assisted us again at checkout, even helping communicate with our taxi driver for our Shinkansen transfer. I especially appreciated the personal touches—the staff greeted us by name throughout our stay and even had our shoes prepared outside our room before departure. SOWAKA was absolutely worth the splurge for our honeymoon. The service, attention to detail, and unique character of each room made this one of the best hospitality experiences I've ever had.
My stay at Sowaka was nothing short of exceptional. The hotel’s design is absolutely beautiful—deeply rooted in traditional Japanese aesthetics, yet refined with a sense of quiet luxury that perfectly complements its surroundings in the heart of Gion District. Being in such a historic and atmospheric area made the entire experience feel even more special and immersive. Although my room was located in the annex (room 212) rather than the main building, it exceeded all expectations. It was spacious, minimalist, and thoughtfully designed in a way that instantly made me feel calm and relaxed. Every detail felt intentional, from the layout to the materials used. I especially appreciated the heated floors—even in the bathroom—which added an extra layer of comfort, particularly after long days of exploring Kyoto. What truly sets this hotel apart, however, is the people. The staff, both at the hotel and in the restaurant, were incredibly warm, welcoming, and attentive. Every interaction felt genuine and caring—I never encountered a single issue during my stay. In fact, my daily exchanges with them became something I genuinely looked forward to, and they often felt like the perfect way to begin or end my day. Everything about Sowaka is amazing, from its serene atmosphere to its impeccable service. It is a place that leaves a lasting impression, and I will most definitely return again in the future.
This is an amazing hotel, you won’t believe what you are walking into from a busy street. The little path way leads into a quite luxurious boutique Japanese building and garden. We got a traditional Japanese style room, it retains the wooden frames and tatami really well, yet it’s equipped with high quality comfortable furnitures as well as an awesome bath room. I also want to call out the amazing service Wendy and the staff provided here, they are all awesome and thoughtful people! The Japanese breakfast is amazing too!
Very pricey and TOTALLY worth it. Sowaka is an oasis of calm and beauty in the midst of the Gion District. We are here at the peak of cherry blossom season, so the streets, temple, shrines…basically everything has throngs of people (locals and tourists alike) everywhere. But walk into Sowaka and feel a world away! Our gorgeous room looks out on a lovely garden interior courtyard, complete with gurgling stream. SO relaxing and beautiful. The restaurant, Gion Roka, is worth a visit even if you aren’t staying here. If you are, you are in for a treat. The food, the service and the attention to guests as individuals is remarkable. The best surprise of all was on Friday and Saturday nights, Happy Hour included a fantastic live performance on the koto, a traditional Japanese harp. We knew the rooms and service would be fantastic, but these performance really put our stay over the top. This is a traditional ryokan. If you are looking for a “regular” luxury experience, stay at the Four Seasons. But if, like us, you truly want to experience the unique culture of the places you visit, Sowaka will not disappoint. The website photos are better than ours, so I won’t post…but do take a look. You will be blown away.
My husband and I stayed at SOWAKA to celebrate our wedding anniversary, and it was one of the most memorable experiences we’ve ever had. The hospitality of the staff was beyond exceptional — every interaction reflected genuine warmth, grace, and an extraordinary attention to detail that perfectly embodies Japanese omotenashi. The Japanese-style breakfast was absolutely fantastic — beautifully presented, perfectly balanced, and a true reflection of Kyoto’s culinary tradition. Every morning felt like a quiet, refined ceremony. The location is also superb — tucked away in a peaceful area yet within easy walking distance of Gion and many cultural sights. From start to finish, SOWAKA made our anniversary celebration incredibly special. It’s not just a stay, but an experience that captures the heart of Japanese elegance and hospitality. We can’t wait to return.
