Third visit: Jou hako good as ever Anago mushi sushi is done well. The anago is well grilled, and rice is nicely flavoured The unagi leaf wrapped sushi is served cold, but the unagi is so well grilled that the aroma and all comes through. It's really very strong, the caramelised smokiness, that's why it's ok for them to serve it cold without being too bland. Second visit: Their inarizushi is really something, the inari is soaked in something so it's sweet and quite flavourful The nishin is decent quality, although still slightly fishy for me, and not the most thick The aji is really very very thin The hirame is super thick, no wonder a single piece is 1500. Flavour of the dish is good as well, except that the yuzu can overpower slightly the fish's original taste Also, they haven't had their signature Saba in a long time First visit: Delicious. Busy during year end and don't allow sit-in then, but normally they always do Don't get the fat rolls with a lot of rice, that's not for most people The jou hako sushi we got was delightful. The unagi was good, the white fish is alright, and the prawn was spectacular. It's got such a nice crunchy Rice ratio was perfect too, and perfumed by yuzu, probably from the preserved yuzu
Even though we waited, this was one of the best restaurants we visited in Japan. The Kyoto-style sushi was unique with no soy sauce or wasabi. The flavors were perfect. Some people who dislike fishy smells may want to avoid. We ordered sake and they let us choose from the cutest nicest shot glasses. It’s no wonder that they’ve been around for more than a century.
Izuju Sushi is over 100 years old and offers the unique Kyoto-style sushi, very different from the usual Edo style variety. The food was dramatically good and unmatched by all the sushi I have ever eaten. We went early--at 11am--to avoid the crowd, and had lunch. Everything we ate was exquisite! Must go and try.
Kyoto-styled sushi house opened since late 19th century. Sushi is quite different from sushi I had back in my home country. Not the best sushi I’ve ever had in Japan though. But the fact that they’ve been in business for more than 100 years means they’re doing something right.
If you love Hanshin Tigers and sushi / sake then this is the place for you. The former Tigers coach, Yoshida-san, who was originally from Kyoto used the frequent this place so the owner knows all the interesting inside stories from that era of Tigers Great atmosphere
