On top of what a top tier Kaiseki restaurant should be, from the ambience music to the young faces in kitchen and then the small twists in flavors, Gion Sasaki has an uniquely innovative side which makes it stand out among the best. Easily one of my favorite restaurants.
If I could leave zero stars I would. I NEVER go out of my way to leave bad reviews, but this entire experience was atrocious. We were given a table in the back (there are two tables) which not only couldn't have felt further from a Michelin Star restaurant experience, but it felt like a rest stop restaurant. This was a completely different experience than the Omakase experience. We were about 6 courses behind everyone who was sitting at the bar, because the entire meal was so rushed. The food was a 4/10. Everything was luke warm - not hot, not cold. When the chef came at the very end of the night to ask how the meal was, I told him how disappointed I was and all of a sudden he seemed to not understand English. Meanwhile at the beginning of the meal, he was eager to welcome us. $750 later, I left starving. This was such a terrible experience it was the worst meal out of all our meals in Japan for 16 days. Save your money. Go somewhere else. You'll thank me.
Our hotel concierge told us they only take reservations for Japanese speakers. Pretty surprising how such antiquated mindset still exists especially in a tourist destination. What's the point of Osaka Expo and so on if some people still have this level of xenophobia?
No customers from abroad allowed after they force you to create an account that collects your personal information. You guys can go stick it. For anyone else, don’t even bother. “We have checked Gion Sasaki's availability, but they are currently not accepting reservations from abroad.”
