We have visited this restaurant multiple times over the years with the expectation of a consistent dining experience. Unfortunately, this recent visit has been disappointing enough that it will likely be our last. Upon arrival, the staff at the entrance were attentive and welcoming, which we appreciated and it created a good first impression. However, once seated, the situation on the dining floor appeared quite different. On several occasions during our meal, a number of staff were gathered together and did not appear attentive to customers. Interestingly, when the lady boss appeared, the team immediately became more active and attentive. This gave the clear impression that service standards are dependent on direct supervision rather than being part of a consistent service culture. We also observed noticeable inconsistency in portion sizes being served. From our observation, certain tables appeared to receive significantly larger portions compared to others. In particular, tourists and some diners with darker skin tones seemed to receive larger servings regardless of gender. Meanwhile, other tables appeared to receive smaller portions. When we politely requested if a little more could be added, instead of providing a proper additional serving, the staff placed only one extra piece, which felt dismissive and unprofessional. The situation created a strong impression of unequal treatment among customers. Consistency in service and fairness in portioning are fundamental expectations in any professional dining establishment. When such inconsistencies are noticeable, it raises serious concerns about service standards and how customers are being treated. In terms of food quality, we also ordered the fried squid, which unfortunately was very rubbery and difficult to chew. The texture and preparation did not meet the level of quality one would reasonably expect. Considering that this restaurant has been continuously awarded Michelin recognition, the overall experience was particularly surprising. Such recognition typically reflects a high level of consistency, professionalism, and hospitality. Based on this experience, the gap between expectation and reality was significant. We hope the management will take these observations seriously and review the service culture, food consistency, and fairness in customer treatment. Maintaining equal standards for all diners should be a fundamental principle for any restaurant, especially one with such a recognised reputation.

Deliciously authentic banana leaf opposite Bangsar Village. Nirwana certainly feels like food heaven. The place is bustling, with lively conversations everywhere and people stuffing their faces and getting their hands dirty with good food. Despite U-Mobile’s loud grand opening next door, I was ecstatic to be here. Time seems to slow down as I eat with a big smile, taking my sweet time to enjoy the rich flavours. The chicken briyani banana leaf stands out from many others in KL. You are served a generous spread that includes cucumber salad, deep-fried bitter gourd, mashed pumpkin, and three different curries: chicken curry, fish curry, and dhal. I opted for all three and slowly enjoyed the fresh, succulent chicken drumstick. To drink, a freshly made salty lassi. It came in a big, tall cup and was surprisingly filling. It’s an acquired taste, definitely a bit tougher to swallow than sweet lassi, but healthier and just as authentic. The only slight downside is having to order upfront at the entrance counter after queueing. This is common at extremely popular restaurants and is a small trade-off that helps maintain service speed and food quality. We queued for nearly 10 minutes at 7pm, which was reasonable and not over the top. So far, Nirwana is my favourite banana leaf in KL, and I look forward to returning every time I visit Bangsar. Highly recommended!

Foods are delicious, service is good. One of the best banana leaf restaurants, it’s been here since long time ago and I realize they did some renovation inside and it looks better than before.

Food: 3 / 3 stars Service & Ambience: 1 / 1 star Value: 0 / 1 star We have eaten here several times, my wife is from Kuala Lumpur, and this was one of the restaurants she frequently visited during her school years. The banana leaf set is still good for me. Especially the fried bitter gourd (actually snake gourd), very delicious. The only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because there is no free refill. The idea behind banana leaf culture is one of generosity and hospitality, and traditionally offers unlimited refills. Business here is very good, prices are above average, but refills are charged at RM2, though I am not sure whether that is per vegetable or per refill of all the vegetables. Personally I am full enough after one round, and do not need to refill, so whether it is chargeable or not actually is of no concern to me. But as a matter of principle, if there is no free refill, then it should no longer be considered banana leaf. Perhaps it should be called Indian economy rice instead. 4 stars.
