I visited Museum Wayang on the weekend. The admission fee was IDR 15,000 per adult. The museum’s Wayang collection is quite unique and culturally valuable. However, in my opinion, the exhibition still lacks a strong explanation of what Wayang truly is and how it became such an important part of Indonesian history and heritage. The immersive and interactive sections of the museum also feel somewhat limited, as they mainly introduce the different types of Wayang without providing deeper information or historical context. On the positive side, since the museum’s revitalization in 2025, the atmosphere has become much more modern, with brighter lighting and improved presentation compared to before. To further enhance visitors’ understanding, the museum could include example videos or live visual displays of traditional puppet performances. This would help visitors better understand how Wayang functions as a storytelling medium and how puppetry has historically been used to communicate moral values, culture, and history.
A quaint little museum in old Jakarta that tells the history of wayang in Indonesia. Part of the museum is the site of an old Dutch church and the funeral site of General governor Jan Pieterszoon Coen. The cute little cats in the museum was the highlight for me :-) and at the souvenir shop you can get little wayang kulits paper figures and they make such nice gifts for friends and family!
Facilities have improved over the years. Premise is clean, well-lit, and properly air conditioned. Each wayng has a QR code that visitors can scan to read more about it, unfortunately, some of the wayangs are still missing information. I guess it is a work in progress.
Cheap ticket, good facilities, friendly staff. They have various collections—nusantara, international, also immersive room facility (check their schedule for this, tho)
Loving the experience I've had here. First floor is the exhibition hall for Wayang from across Indonesia. The display is very beautiful and the explanation on each collection is very engaging. On the second floor there are more to see such as immersive room (seperate ticket), a small library, exhibition hall for national puppets from across the world, and gamelan display. You can also "play" the gamelan and experience being a puppeteer (Dalang) through the interactive screen here. There's also a small yet clean praying room here. Overall a very worth-to-visit place!
