One of the first places in Istanbul I’d confidently take a foreigner is Karaköy Lokantası. It’s a classical one in Karaköy, a very well-known with good reputation. The mezes are excellent, and its central location and nice ambiance make for a pleasant experience. It’s a Michelin star one, I would say the combination of a mezze restaurant with a modern touch in serving. I really loved the service and the way the food is presented. Food is delicious and fresh, mezzes are amazing, you can pair food with wine, raki or another alcohol. We ordered three quarters of cold mezze, one salad and one hot starter. Main dishes seem quite appealing too. The service is quick, the staff is friendly, the ambiance is nice and of course it is a bit pricey. But you receive quality service. Given the food and quality, I view it is worthed! I strongly recommend, for a first-hand experience to Turkish food!
In Istanbul, the first restaurant we’d confidently take a foreigner to would probably be @karakoylokantasi. Its success with Turkish mezes, central location, simple ambiance, and above-average service quality make it an ideal restaurant. Especially regarding the mezes, I think they mostly apply traditional recipes well. In recent years, I've noticed a significant increase in popularity, perhaps due to the influence of @michelinguide, and consequently, a substantial rise in prices. As a regular customer until 2023, I can say that they used to have a more balanced pricing structure compared to the market. The bread charge of 80₺ per person, 140₺ for water, and the 10% service charge are, in my opinion, small, inappropriate additions. I still give it a 5/5 rating for the food, but my overall experience outside of the food is a 3/5.
I had the pleasure of dining at Karaköy Lokantası, and it was a standout experience from beginning to end. I was in Istanbul for a procedure at Vera Clinic, and while exploring local seafood spots, I stumbled upon this gem. I had one mission before leaving: find a great octopus dish—and they delivered immediately. Even though it wasn’t on the menu, my server was more than accommodating. That set the tone right away. I started with charred octopus and mineral water, planning to finish with sea bass. My server (glasses, warm energy—wish I caught your name) recommended a crisp white wine to pair with the sea bass, and it was spot on. Throughout the meal, I really took my time—soaking in the ambiance, the textures, the flavors—and everything just worked. The octopus came lightly charred, tender, and beautifully dressed in olive oil, paired with grape leaves that added a subtle citrus lift. It was one of those rare dishes that instantly transports you—my own Ratatouille moment. Simple, intentional, and memorable. The sea bass carried that same balance—clean, flavorful, and elevated even more by the wine pairing. What impressed me just as much as the food was the service. I arrived earlier than my original dinner reservation, closer to lunch, and the hostess graciously accommodated me before the rush. At no point did I feel hurried. The entire staff operated with a quiet attentiveness—always present without hovering. Even as a solo diner (AirPods in, just nodding or making eye contact), they were incredibly intuitive and respectful of my space. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference. I also appreciated the range of diners around me—other solo travelers, families sharing plates—which gave the space a lively, authentic feel. Moderate noise, but never distracting. Sometimes less really is more, and Karaköy Lokantası executes that philosophy beautifully. I left feeling refreshed, satisfied, and ready to take on the rest of the city. 5-star experience without hesitation. I’d come back in a heartbeat.
Really enjoyed this place. Little upscale restaurant in walking distance from hotel. Fast service, nice and elegant seating area with some terrace seating available as well. I order some octopus which was little too , but my standard when it comes to octopus is high so … Bonita fish was excellent! Salad also simple but right on the dot!
Perfect Lunch, Legendary Fava, and a Very Special Wine Experience We chose Karaköy Lokantası for a late lunch with two college friends and realized it was the best decision! The variety and flavor of the mezes were simply magnificent. I especially want to highlight the Fava; despite being from İzmir, this was the most delicious, smoothest fava I have ever tasted! You must try this flavor. The staff was extremely attentive, friendly, and fast. Their small suggestions regarding our table made our experience even better. The wine 🍷 chosen for us by Ms. Aylin, the owner of the restaurant, was a perfect blend not sold on the market and is a must-try for wine lovers. The ambiance of the place is lovely; it feels like a harbor to take refuge in amidst the busy, bustling life of the city. It offers an elegant, airy, and very suitable environment for chatting with old friends. I highly recommend it to anyone in Karaköy looking to experience the best of local flavors and have an enjoyable day! My friends and I can't wait to come back.
