Nice museum with interesting exhibitions. Worth to visit and have a coffee on the cafeteria. It’s kept clean and it’s not very busy so you can enjoy it. It’s located close to restaurants and shops and you get a nice view from the rooftop of the museum. Perfect to go alone or on a date. The museum store has good merchandise and there’s a nice library too. You can buy tickets directly at the entrance.
Wonderful museum situated in a picturesque location at the harbor of Istanbul just down from Pera. Easy walk along the water from Galata bridge and we enjoyed the roof terrace. The exhibits were interesting enough with artists we’d never heard of since we don’t know Turkish artists. The quality and level of presentation was pretty high and we learned so much about the culture and history from the art. There’s a small cafe where we met a friend and talked for awhile. Another space houses a view restaurant. One huge surprise was the wonderfully curated museum shop. There were such interesting items including a T shirt press where you could personalize your shirt with iron on artwork. Lovely idea!
Istanbul Modern is a nice place to visit if you’re interested in contemporary art. The building itself is modern and well designed, with open spaces and great views of the water, which adds a lot to the overall experience. The exhibitions are well curated and change regularly, so there’s usually something new to see. It’s not a very large museum, but it’s well organized and easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed. The café and shop are also pleasant spots to take a break after walking through the galleries. Overall, it’s a calm, modern contrast to Istanbul’s historical sites and worth a visit if you enjoy modern art and architecture.
Istanbul Modern at Galataport is an impressive museum in a prime location in Karaköy, right by the water. The rooftop terrace is a nice addition. Although the weather was rainy and foggy today, the view over the Bosphorus was still pleasant. The strongest part of the visit was the permanent collection, especially the 21st-century works and paintings. The selection contemporary Turkish art is strong and well curated. The current exhibition of Semiha Berksoy was less convincing for me personally. Compared to the permanent collection, it was not as engaging. The service in the museum bar/restaurant was not at the level we usually experience elsewhere in Istanbul.
The reception team at the Istanbul Modern was inadequate in providing a cordial and welcoming experience. We walked away without seeing the exhibition indoor but enjoyed the outdoor artworks free of charge. We also got lucky to chance upon a bosphorus tour booth (Port LVM) and paid 600TL per person for a 80 minutes scenic cruise on the beautiful waters with seagulls as companions on a sunny day! Money better spent!
