M+ is one of the most impressive contemporary museums I’ve visited. The curatorial work is exceptionally strong — thoughtful, layered, and clearly built around ideas rather than just objects. The architecture of the building itself is stunning and plays a huge role in the overall experience. It’s not just a container for art, but part of the narrative — spacious, calm, and beautifully designed. The ticket is not cheap (I paid around 190 HKD), but the quality, density, and diversity of exhibitions fully justify it. There is a lot to see, and it feels substantial rather than superficial. Two exhibitions stood out in particular: Lee Bul’s show, which was powerful and visually striking, and “Things, Spaces and Interactions”, which explored how design and architecture evolve with society — very intelligent and engaging. I also appreciated the long-form video work (around 40 minutes) — this is not a museum for quick consumption. The space is very comfortable: well-organised, clean, with plenty of staff and facilities. The only downsides were the lack of free drinking water stations and limited seating in the café. I would recommend M+ to people who want to engage deeply with contemporary art and design, not just walk through highlights. Plan at least 3 hours — ideally more.
We went in June 2026 and greatly enjoyed the Lee Bul Exhibition. This is a top quality Modern Art museum, impeccably maintained and truly modern and pleasant to visit. The staff all speak English. The coffee shop inside the museum serves up some incredible stuff. And after you’ve enjoyed the arts here, you should also enjoy the spectacular view of Hong Kong harbour/skyline from its riverbank. Also, must note that I was pleasantly surprised to see some artwork critiquing/satirizing Communist China and Mao Zedong (see my pictures). Contrary to common western misunderstanding, freedom of artistic expressions here seem to actually be quite well tolerated?
A brilliant way to spend the day in Hong Kong. M+ Museum was super easy to get to by ferry, and the building itself is worth the visit, beautiful, modern, and perfectly suited to the scale of the work inside. The collections and exhibitions are thoughtfully spread over multiple levels, with a great mix of contemporary art, design, architecture, and visual culture. The shop was excellent too. We absolutely loved it ♥️
The architecture of the museum and the rooftop garden and its view alone make M+ worth the visit! The art collection is stunning! The Robert Rauschenberg and Zao Wou Ki exhibitions were serious highlights. We feel fortunate to have had the exposure to the Asian arts this museum provided. A true must do for any trip to Hong Kong. Highly recommended!
The art here is simply terrific. We've visited a lot of modern art galleries and this is right up there with the best. Good that there is a focus on Chinese artists. And, unsurprisingly, the building (by Herzog and de Meuron of Tate Modern fame) is every bit as good as the contents. It's good value for money too, with an ticket coming in at around £19. Good food options on the boardwalk outside as well, with a fantastic view across the Harbour
