Should you be seeking an accommodation option in the vibrant heart of Hong Kong that is also budget-friendly, Ah Shan Hostel presents itself as a prime choice, prioritizing convenience above all else. The most remarkable aspect of this hostel is, unequivocally, its location. Positioned directly in the central area of the Mong Kok district, you will find yourself merely a one to two-minute stroll from the MTR station and major bus routes. Furthermore, you are just steps away from the Ladies' Market and prominent shopping centers. The surrounding thoroughfares are replete with an extensive array of local and international dining establishments. The hostel is situated within a lively, high-density residential building. While elevator usage may experience congestion during peak times, potentially leading to a five to ten-minute wait, this offers a truly authentic insight into the daily routines and living circumstances of local residents. It provides a raw, genuine, and dynamic ambiance that differs significantly from the more pristine environment of a luxury hotel. Regarding practical considerations, this is a budget-conscious establishment, making it most suitable for travelers who primarily require a place to rest after a day of exploration. The rooms are fundamental. While the air conditioning and bathroom facilities are operational, they do reflect the age of the building. It possesses a "backpacker" ethos, where the emphasis is placed on affordability and its close proximity to the city's most appealing attractions.
The accommodation is close to Mongkok MTR station. From the airport, you can take bus A21 directly to the location. The rooms are clean with en-suite bathrooms with shampoo and soap . Adapters and power strips are provided, which is very convenient. There's a water dispenser, coffee, and a hairdryer. It's recommended for solo female travelers as it's safe and the surrounding area isn't isolated.Near there have two restaurants are open 24 hrs.The owner is very welcoming, and the price is very affordable and good value.
Disappointing experience: Rude management and overpriced for the quality I decided to stay at Ah Shan Hostel for one night after a week in a hotel to experience the local vibe and meet people. Unfortunately, it was a huge mistake. I paid €86 for a tiny private room, which is extremely expensive for what you actually get. The bathroom had no separation for the shower, meaning the entire toilet gets soaked every time you use it. However, the worst part was the service. When I returned to pick up my luggage (which they keep unsecured in the hallway without any tags), the owner—an older woman—started screaming at me simply because I was putting some items I had just bought into my suitcase. She was incredibly aggressive, raising her voice and implying that I could be stealing from others. When I calmly asked her not to shout and offered to show her the receipt for my purchases, she continued to be hostile. To make matters worse, despite having paid a premium price for a hostel, she refused to let me charge my phone for a few minutes (I had 3% battery and needed to get to the airport) unless I paid an extra rental fee. Her response to my complaints was simply: "Go to a hotel next time." After this, the owner started to scream on the lady who received me. Lastly, for animal lovers: this hostel is "famous" for their resident cat, which they even use as their WhatsApp profile picture. When I arrived and asked to see him, the owner told me he was sick but that she wouldn't take him to the vet because it was "too expensive." It is heartbreaking to see them use a pet for marketing while neglecting its health.
It was really hard to find the accommodation as no information was provided on how to get there. We had to ask multiple people where exactly the hostel is. We booked a double bed room but when we arrived we got the cheaper twin bed room. The rooms are quite small, but you can see that on the provided pictures. Everytime you take a shower, the whole bathroom, including the toilet, are flooded. Our door lock was broken and on the last day, someone was entering our room while we were laying in bed without clothes. The person didn't even apologize, and we felt very uncomfortable. Last but not least they allow you to store your luggage, but it's 30 HKD per piece, which is incredible expensive, considering you're a hotel guest. We therefore took all of our luggage to the restaurant instead. Next time we'd either skip Hong Kong or invest a little more money into the accommodation. Update: yes, we're in the correct place. We saw a price list regarding the luggage when we stayed in Ah Shan Hostel. The response is not very understanding, considering we got the wrong room, no arrival information was provided and someone was disturbing our privacy. Therefore we give 1 star now.
Im really happy being from montreal Canada and traveling across Asia for a while. No Jed bugs really sweet owner. Her English is good she’s super sweet, the room for 2 nights was clean. Do not expect ritz Carlton but she takes care of her rooms. The BOSS the cat super friendly and I’m a sucker for cats he’s always in the reception. Great stay and friendly staff thank you. Beds are clean, toilets you get one in your room and jeez for the price I was happy and great location building has many elevators from the Main Street 14th floor is the reception and the rooms are also on the 15th floor where mine was. No funky smells and decent mattress but enough for good sleep and location excellent
