"Painting and Poetry, Words and Signs, a Perfect Symbiosis of Verse and Color" by Riccardo Rescio The exhibition "Painting and Poetry. Ungaretti and the Art of Seeing," inaugurated on Thursday, March 16, 2024, by Tornabuoni Arte at its Florence location on Lungarno Cellini, represents an extraordinary event that completely transforms the way literature and the visual arts can dialogue. For the first time, the prestigious gallery presents a mixed exhibition that explores the perfect symbiosis between painting and poetry: a poet who extols colors on canvas and painters who reveal verses through their works. Born in Alexandria, Egypt, in 1888 and died in Milan in 1970, Giuseppe Ungaretti enjoyed an intense and multifaceted relationship with the visual arts, particularly painting, unlike any other twentieth-century poet. This exhibition, curated by the renowned essayist and literary critic Alessandra Zingone, one of the leading experts on Ungaretti's poetry and the arts of his time, presents a surprising panorama of Italian and European art from the 1910s to the 1970s. The exhibition is not simply a collection of works: it is an immersive journey that allows us to explore a previously unseen and intimate side of Ungaretti's artistic life. We are presented with archival materials, writings, correspondence, and poems, along with a selection of works by artists with whom Ungaretti not only came into contact but shared profound interactions and collaborations. Among these, the names of Giacomo Balla, Ardengo Soffici, Carlo Carrà, Gino Severini, Amedeo Modigliani, Giorgio de Chirico, Pablo Picasso, Enrico Prampolini, Ottone Rosai, Jean Fautrier, Franco Gentilini, Giuseppe Capogrossi, Alberto Burri, and Piero Dorazio stand out. On the occasion of the exhibition, two previously unpublished works by Piero Dorazio dedicated to the poet are being presented for the first time. The exhibition explores how Ungaretti, one of the most important Italian poets of the twentieth century, channeled a profound visual sensibility through his poetry, using essential verses and powerful images that evoke avant-garde painting techniques such as Futurism and Cubism. His poetry is a world in which words become images, making his symbiotic relationship with many artists of his time natural. His dialogue with Giorgio de Chirico, for example, manifests itself through a shared interest in mystery, dreamlike realities, and symbolism, where Ungaretti's poems and de Chirico's metaphysical painting find a powerful harmony. His partnership with Amedeo Modigliani is also significant: the famous portrait of Ungaretti, painted by Modigliani, celebrates their mutual esteem and artistic collaboration. The exhibition at Lungarno Cellini is a testament to the influence of futuristic and modernist movements, represented by artists such as Pablo Picasso and Severini, on Ungaretti, encouraging him to experiment and break with literary traditions. Not only a frequent visitor but also an art critic, Ungaretti helped create a bridge between poetry and painting, enriching both fields with his literary and visual insights. Ungaretti's "The Art of Seeing," celebrated with such care and dedication in the Tornabuoni Arte exhibition, offers a unique perspective on the cultural intersections of the twentieth century, revealing the complexity and beauty of the dialogue between the arts. The exhibition will be open until July 12, 2024, in the evocative space of the gallery at Lungarno Benvenuto Cellini 3: an unmissable event for lovers of art and literature. Florence, May 17, 2024
