A Romanesque basilica perched high on a hill, featuring a stunning mosaic facade and a crypt unchanged since the 11th century.

San Miniato al Monte is one of the most peaceful places in Florence. The views over the city are wide and open, with the Duomo and rooftops stretching across the skyline. It feels elevated in every sense. Compared to Piazzale Michelangelo, the atmosphere here is quieter and less crowded, especially in the early morning. You have space to walk, pause, and take in the view without feeling rushed. The church façade is stunning. The geometric marble details and symmetry are striking in photos. Behind the church, there are shaded paths and small green spaces that feel calm and intimate. Sunset is beautiful here. The light falls softly over Florence and creates warm tones across the city. Morning light is also lovely if you prefer something more private. If you are visiting Florence and want iconic views without the chaos of large crowds, this is one of the best spots in the city. As a local Florence photographer, I often recommend this location to couples planning a proposal, engagement, or family photos in Florence who want something iconic but relaxed.

The Abbazia di San Miniato al Monte is one of Florence’s finest examples of Romanesque architecture, dramatically set on a hill overlooking the city. Founded in the 11th century on the site of Saint Minias’s martyrdom, the church features a striking façade of white and green marble arranged in geometric patterns. Its harmonious proportions and serene design reflect early medieval ideals of balance and symbolism. Inside, the basilica preserves an atmospheric interior with a raised presbytery, a richly decorated crypt, and a remarkable mosaic of Christ between the Virgin and Saint Minias in the apse. The chapel of the Cardinal of Portugal, a Renaissance jewel by Michelozzo and Luca della Robbia, adds refined elegance. Still maintained by monks, San Miniato offers spiritual calm and one of the most breathtaking panoramic views of Florence.

San Miniato al Monte (Italian: Basilica di San Miniato al Monte - Basilica of Saint Minius on the Mount) is the basilica of the Abbey of San Miniato, one of five abbeys in Florence, the capital of Tuscany in central Italy. Situated on a mountain, at one of the highest points in the city, it is one of the finest examples of the Romanesque-Florentine style. It has the title of minor basilica (basilica minore). When we was there it was ander reconstruction, so all floor and walls was covered. Its totally free for visiting, and from there opens so breathtaking view on city. Definitely recommend.

A quiet yet elegant church uphill in Firenze. Although it was under renovation during my visit on 10 February 2026, there are details about the renovation and the church can still be entered.

Beautiful church inside and out. If you come in shooting photos they will usher you out as it is a church for praying so be mindful of that to ensure your experience is good
