You can find the Museum tucked away in Lady Stair’s Close within the aptly named Lady Stair’s House. If not paying attention, you can easily missed the entrance from Royal Mile According to the Museum, the house was built in 1622. Different well-off families lived there until it was given to the city in 1907 for use as a museum. If you visit the Museum, make sure to take the time to appreciate the beautiful house that has its own fascinating history. The museum is dedicated to just three famous Scottish writers: Robert Burns, Sir Walter Scott, and Robert Louis Stevenson, and contains books, manuscripts, portraits, and the odd statue, along with information giving insight into each writer’s life story In the area devoted to Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) there is a precious first edition of his novel Waverley, a printing press, a chess set, an inkwell, and the rocking horse he used as a child. Yup, same Scott whose memorial is the only the second-largest monument to a writer in the world The mansion has gone through many renovations since then and has a writerly ambiance to it.
This is such a cute, informative little museum nestled right in the heart of Edinburgh! Packed with so much interesting information about famous Scottish writers, and really nicely laid out in such a beautiful building. Completely free as well! I would definitely recommend a visit, to locals and tourists alike! Very nice gift shop as well with some really unique items.
I'd advise anyone interested in learning about the lives of the famous Scottish writers Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Sir Walter Scott, to visit this place. And it's free to enter! Plenty of artifacts and possessions of the writers lie here along with details of their travels, old manuscripts, statues and some very personal effects such as Stevenson's boots. It's all navigated via a very old stone building with plenty of spiral staircase and narrow passageays to tackle. There is also a gift shop to enjoy.
This place celebrates 3 if Edinburghs most famous writers. The staff were really knowledgeable about them so tap into their knowledge. There's tight spiral staircase so be warned. I woukd say its a must visit at least once.
Very cured museum developed on different floors with narrow entry (it seems like a farytale). Free entry and not crowded. Many historical objects belonged to the writers and also installations. Quite interactive and moreover they provide you many infos! I surely recommend a quick visit there if you are planning to vist Edinburgh
