National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Went here mostly because it was raining and we needed somewhere to go near India Gate. Didn't plan it, just walked in. Honestly one of the better accidental decisions I've made in a while. NGMA is housed in a beautiful old building — the former Jaipur House — and the architecture itself is worth seeing before you even look at a single painting. High ceilings, grand rooms, natural light coming in from the top. The whole space just feels different from the moment you enter. Inside there's a massive collection of Indian modern and contemporary art spanning over 150 years. Paintings, sculptures, photographs, installations — some of it I understood immediately, some of it I stood in front of for two minutes and still had no clue what I was looking at. 😂 But that's kind of the point with modern art I think. The works of Amrita Sher-Gil were the highlight for me. Never heard of her before this visit but her paintings stopped me in my tracks. Really powerful stuff. Also found the older Company School paintings and early Indian landscape art surprisingly interesting — didn't expect to connect with something that old but here we are. The permanent collection floors are well laid out and easy to walk through. There's also a temporary exhibition gallery which had a different show going on during my visit. Worth checking what's currently on before you go. Vibe inside is calm and quiet. Nobody rushing you, no loud crowds. Just people slowly moving from one artwork to the next. For a busy city like Delhi this kind of silence is rare and actually really refreshing. What I liked The building itself is stunning, feels like a heritage experience Amrita Sher-Gil collection alone makes it worth coming Very peaceful and uncrowded on weekdays Well maintained, good lighting on the artworks Affordable entry ticket What could be better Some sections felt a bit poorly lit for viewing detailed works Audio guide or app based guide would really help casual visitors The café inside is very basic, limited options Signage between floors can get confusing Weekend crowds near the popular galleries can get a little annoying My tip — Come on a weekday morning when it's quiet. Give yourself at least 2 hours minimum. Don't rush it. Even if you know nothing about art, just walk slowly and see what catches your eye. Something will. Also the garden area outside is really nice for a quick sit down before or after. Great view of the surroundings near India Gate. Unexpected visit. Really glad it happened. 📍 Jaipur House, near India Gate, New Delhi 🎟️ ₹20 Indians | ₹500 Foreigners ⏰ 11 AM – 6:30 PM | Closed Mondays 🚇 Metro: Central Secretariat / Udyog Bhawan
Definitely a great place to explore a wide range of contemporary and modern art, along with fascinating pieces that reflect ancient heritage. I really appreciated how well the artifacts have been preserved, it beautifully showcases how the traditions and culture of the nation have evolved over time. Art lovers would truly enjoy this space That said, it was a bit disappointing that only one exhibition was open during my visit, as the others were closed due to a function and ongoing maintenance
I recently visited this place and had a really wonderful time exploring the huge collection. The museum is housed in the beautiful, historic Jaipur House, and it showcases an incredible variety of modern Indian art, from striking paintings to unique sculptures. The layout is spacious, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it the perfect spot to just walk around quietly and take everything in at your own pace. It is very well-maintained, clean, and quite affordable to enter, making it an excellent place to spend a calm afternoon away from the usual city hustle if you appreciate creativity and art.
Loved my visit to the National Gallery of Modern Art. The paintings were beautiful, the environment was peaceful, and it was a great place to sit and sketch. A calm and inspiring space that every art enthusiast should visit.
For people who appreciate Art, they should never miss this place in Delhi. Quite lot of places to cover inside as there are new wings made for more Art galleries. It'll take atleast an hour for one building/wing each because most of them have 5 floors to cover including the lower ground. Very beautiful and serene place. Photography isn't allowed for any paintings, so please make sure of that. Get tickets from the entrance, 30-40 INR for Indian Citizens.
