Located in the ancestral home of the famous chronicler Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, this museum offers a chronological journey from Cusco's pre-ceramic era to the colonial period. It features an impressive collection of paintings from the Cusco School, including works by Diego Quispe Tito, and artifacts from the Chavín and Nazca cultures. The building itself is a masterpiece of colonial architecture with a beautiful courtyard, built over Inca walls, making it a perfect place to understand the blended heritage of Peru.
I used my tourist pass I bought for entry. Nicely laid out and lots of good history with artifacts. Done within an hour
Super Cool and included in the cusco ticket. Kids loved it.
The museum is located inside a beautiful 16th-century colonial mansion that once served as the residence of the mestizo Inca writer and chronicler Garcilaso de la Vega, which already makes the visit interesting from the very beginning. On the ground floor, visitors can see the fossil of a prehistoric animal that once lived in the region, while also learning more about pre-Inca and Inca history. The museum also displays ceramics, ancient tools, weapons, jewelry, and small idols discovered over time. On the upper floor, the collection focuses more on religious paintings and the history of Garcilaso de la Vega, helping visitors better understand his importance to Peruvian culture and historical records. It is a very interesting museum for anyone who enjoys history and wants to learn more about the different periods that helped shape Cusco.
Likely one of the better museums in Cusco, covering the history of the city, the Incas, and the colonial period. Ticket is included in the Bileto Turistico. There are English translations for most exhibits and displays (which is not generally the case in Cusco...), although the translation is not perfect and the text is faded in some places. We spent 30 minutes walking through the museum, but definitely worth a full hour if you're interested.
