A striking modern extension to the royal library, clad in black granite that reflects the water of the harbor.

Good to know
Free entry; features a quiet, soaring atrium and a great waterfront cafe.

The Royal Danish Library — especially The Black Diamond and the old reading halls — is one of those places in Copenhagen that feels more like a cultural landmark than just a library. From the outside, The Black Diamond stands out with its dark modern architecture beside the water, but inside the atmosphere quickly shifts between modern design and old historic halls. The most impressive part for me was definitely the old section of the library. The tall white ceilings, dark wooden walls, large chandeliers, and long hallways give the place an almost “Hogwarts-like” feeling. It has a different kind of silence than a normal library. Heavier, calmer, more historical. Even just walking through the building felt like part of the experience. The architectural model of The Black Diamond and the connection between the old and new buildings was also interesting to see. You can clearly feel the contrast between modern and historic Danish architecture, yet somehow it works very well together. I also understand why many people recommend combining the visit with the nearby Library Garden behind the building. The entire area around the library, the canal, and Christiansborg creates a quiet break from the busy city and makes it a great place to walk around with a camera or simply sit and relax. The café seems to get mixed reviews, especially regarding prices and food quality, so I would personally focus more on the building itself, the atmosphere, and the exhibitions rather than the café experience. As architecture, culture, and atmosphere, however, the library is absolutely worth visiting. If you enjoy history, architecture, quiet places, or simply beautiful old buildings with atmosphere, The Royal Danish Library is one of the best places to visit in Copenhagen.

Stunning architecture, serene waterfront setting, and beautifully curated spaces. The blend of culture, design, and atmosphere creates a truly memorable visit. Perfect for a quiet escape or inspiring exploration. A must-see destination in Copenhagen that effortlessly combines elegance, intellect, and Nordic minimalism.

Very modern and abstract design of a library with intricate design and planning. Within it is a reading room which looks super old school charming and grand although no pictures are allowed. There were many groups of young people studying and on their laptops through the entire library. There also is a cafe in the library which was rather packed. Overall nice but less activities for kids compared to the one in Aarhus.

The Black Diamond (Royal Danish Library) is a stunning blend of modern architecture and cultural heritage. Completed in 1999, its sleek black granite façade reflects Copenhagen's harbor, while the interior boasts a luminous atrium, Per Kirkeby's grand fresco, and panoramic views. Open daily with free admission, it offers exhibitions, concerts, and a café. A must-visit for architecture enthusiasts and culture seekers.

Amazing architecture, cozy atmosphere to study or to do research, to buy books, snacks and to enjoy Danish hygge right on the water front when it's sunny or inside
