Operating since 1877, this is the high temple of traditional smørrebrød, where the herring is pristine and the aquavit flows freely.

We loved the Beuf Tartare and smoke eel smørrebrod, so delicious. Not a big fan of the Ships Cooks herring as it was too sour for my liking. Snaps were really nice to sip in-between bites, it elevates the experience! We liked the selection Schønnemann offered. So many varieties of smørrebrod, it’s fun to see what the other tables ordered. Will definitely come back and try more!
What a place. Old school, cosy, proper Copenhagen atmosphere. Dark wood, history in the walls, packed with locals and you immediately feel you chose well. The herring was excellent. Clean, precise flavours. But the Greenland shrimps were the real star. Sweet, fresh, generous. Exactly how this classic should be done. No nonsense, just top execution. Desserts were also top. Not an afterthought. Properly crafted and absolutely worth keeping space for. Service is professional but relaxed. They know what they are doing and they have clearly been doing it for a long time. This is not trendy Nordic minimalism. This is tradition done seriously well. If you want authentic Danish lunch culture, this is it.
OK let's just get down to business - it is decent! I can see why it is always fully booked so make sure you book ahead of time. 2 dishes each is suggested & that is fine for lunch. 3 each if you want to load up. Just be wary of the schnapps - it is traditional to have it with your food but I have to disagree, they go a long way to serve a great standard of food with some delicate flavours - you dont want to then nuke your mouth with schnapps. I had a lunch beer on the go as well so I was half-cut when I left as well haha
If you plan to visit Copenhagen, I think you must book a table at this restaurant for sure. I really liked the place. It wasn't only about the food but also the overall experience. It is a great showcase of Copenhagen's restaurant culture, and Schønemann has its own authentic soul as well. The staff is super friendly and professional. At first, I was warmly greeted and then taken to my table. I ordered fried fillet of plaice - "a Dane" - and a Schønemann beer. The beer was great in its simplicity. My dish was served quickly. It might seem like a simple dish, but the plaice was cooked perfectly, and the mayonnaise on top gave it an even deeper flavor. I was offered a shot of schnapps by a waiter. I knew that shots of schnapps could be pricey here, but I couldn’t resist the suggestion and went with a medium shot. It was quite good as well. It warms you up much faster than other strong drinks, and I really needed it since I had to walk to get there and it was quite a cold day. Once I was done with my dish, I asked the waiter if he could suggest a dessert from the menu. He suggested Town Hall Pancakes, and I must say it was a great recommendation. The pancakes were filled with soft, thick cream with a rich citrus taste, and apricot jam on top made the flavors even more outstanding. Additionally, there were almonds, which went really well with this combination. This place might be a little pricey, but I would say it's absolutely worth it. It’s better to spend a few more kroner and experience this historical restaurant. You must keep in mind that there is always high demand for this place. From my experience, I suppose most of the customers are Danish people. So if you want to visit, book a table in advance. And when I say in advance, I mean at least a week earlier, just to be sure you'll get a table. I guess there are months when the place might be fully booked. For example, I wasn't able to book a table three weeks before Christmas because all the tables were booked for the whole month. If you arrive before opening hours, you might have to wait outside for a while.
Reservations are an absolute must here. We went for lunch, and they let everyone in all at once at 2:15 PM. The portions are quite generous, so for Asian diners, I highly recommend ordering about three dishes for two people. Also, keep in mind that there seemed to be an extra charge added to the final bill, though I'm not entirely sure if it was tax.
