The National Museum of Denmark has very impressive historical artifacts and a rich collection. However, the guidance and explanations are quite limited. It would be helpful if the map showed suggested routes and how much time each section takes, so visitors could plan better. We spent about 2 hours, but it seems at least 5 hours are needed to see the museum properly.

Four floors of Danish prehistory, history and anthropology, well laid out and with enough context to keep it genuinely engaging rather than just a parade of objects. The highlights for us were the bog finds — both human remains and everyday items preserved for centuries in the peat — and a remarkably well-conserved shipwreck. This kind of material gives you a real sense of how people lived here long before there was anything resembling a Danish state. You feel that immediately when standing in front of these objects. Easily one of the better national museums we've visited. Informative without being overwhelming, and the collection speaks for itself.

I really enjoyed my time here. There's such a variety of themes and items here to keep me occupied for hours and hours. I ran out of time here as we have a flight to catch but I could easily have spent another couple of hours more. The Viking experience and collection was mentioned to me as a highlight and chief feature and I would agree. But the other exhibits have also been well curated and sensibly logically organized. However it can feel like a labyrinth as there are rooms that lead off rooms and doors that need to be opened which if you're not paying attention to you could easily by pass and miss a room. The collection covers a wide range of regions of the world and eras. There are items that have come from the royal collection as well which explains the extensiveness of the vases and urns. I saw things from the Greek, Roman, Assyrian empire and Egyptian artifacts. There were mummies, sarcophaguses as well as Assyrian reliefs from Nimrud. The Danish connection to various regions of the world was also well represented with audio stories to complement the exhibits.(There are more photos posted to the general collection also.)

We often pass by the National Museum during our walking tours, and it never fails to impress. Even from the outside, you get a sense of the building’s importance and grandeur. Inside, it’s one of Denmark’s most fascinating museums, covering everything from Viking treasures and royal history to modern Danish culture. The exhibitions are very well presented and easy to follow, even if you’re not a history expert. It’s a great place to learn how Denmark evolved through the centuries, and perfect for anyone interested in understanding the country beyond the typical highlights. If you have time before or after a tour, I highly recommend stepping inside. It’s central, family friendly, and offers a deep insight into Danish heritage. A must-visit if you want to see more than just the city sights. -Local guide & tour host in Copenhagen

Really nice museum. If you are with small kids you and your partner could easily change while one is in the kids corner and other one observes the rest of the museum. Good and helpful staff. The Viking exhibition was really creative. They have impressive artifacts generally.
