You gotta buy tickets in advance. We got tickets and was a few mins late but was able to join our group. This is worth a visit to understand American architectural movement and the tie in with prairie architecture. Afterwards I recommend a visit to the science and technology museum which is a 20 mins walk.

The Frederick C. Robie House is truly an impressive showcase of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural genius 😊 The Prairie-style design immediately stands out, especially with its beautiful leaded glass windows and those long, stretched bricks that highlight the strong horizontal lines of the building. It creates such a unique and calming visual effect 🏡✨ Inside, the house feels open and uncluttered, which makes it easy to walk around and really take in all the details at your own pace. The minimal furnishing actually adds to the experience, giving you space to imagine life in this iconic home. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, sharing lots of interesting facts along the way 📚👏 Another plus is the convenience—there’s usually decent street parking available on weekends 🚗 and the whole process felt smooth. After buying tickets on-site, I only had to wait about 5 minutes before the one-hour tour began, which was perfect ⏱️ Overall, a very enjoyable and well-organized visit!

We had a great time walking through the house. There are several flights of stairs on the tour without ada access. Worth the trip and the visit to take the tour. Staff were amazing and photos are allowed inside and out.

I finally made it out to the Robie House during a trip to Hyde Park, and honestly, it left a bigger impression on me than I was expecting. From the moment I walked up to it, the house feels different — it doesn’t look like a typical historic home you see in most cities. Instead, those long horizontal lines, low roofs, and bands of brick and glass give it this kind of forward-thinking, almost modern vibe — even though it was finished over a hundred years ago. What struck me first was just how deliberate every design choice feels. The way the roof extends out over the walls, the way the windows and terraces seem to stretch sideways rather than upward — it all makes the house feel grounded, almost like it’s part of the landscape. Knowing this was groundbreaking for its time made me appreciate it even more. Inside, the openness is refreshing. Rooms flow into each other in a way that feels intentional, carving out space without feeling cluttered. I was surprised by how calm the interior felt: the light filtering through leaded glass, the subtle connection between each room, and the absence of overly fussy decoration made it easy to really focus on the design itself. One thing I loved was realizing how ahead of its time this house really was. It doesn’t feel like a relic — it feels like a piece of architecture that could still influence designs today. Knowing that this design helped define an entire style of American architecture just made the visit that much cooler. Overall, the Robie House wasn’t just a look into the life of a wealthy early-20th-century family — it was a lesson in how bold design choices can stand the test of time. If you’re into architecture, history, or just curious about what makes a building great, this place is absolutely worth your time.
