Best salsa in town. The bar is unique, super fun eith high quality music. If you are in cartagena it is a must go. The bands are amazing and they play every night. O recommend getting a reservation or arriving early, it can get crowded. Also do not miss the fisrt band, normally they are great. The prices are a bit high, but is not out of the norm for a entertainment place. They charge an entrance fee.
Great night at Cafe Havana! Excellent salsa (but loud!), friendly crowd, decent food (for a snack but much better to eat before going). Expensive (70 cop cover, pricey drinks, 70 cop for a so-so Cuban sandwich) but manageable to experience this iconic salsa club.
I went with a group of musicians to hear/see the band play. Afterwards we all agreed, the trumpet player MUST learn how to play harmoniously with a band! He was cluelessly playing, at least 5 decibels above everyone else. And at the end he was walking around, smiling like he was Louie Satchmo and had done a great job. It was horrible/unbearable; He sortve ruined the night. Otherwise the club was a cool tourist trap.
We had heard that Café Havana was one of the best places for salsa and bachata dancing, but that wasn’t our experience. When we arrived, there was a live band playing on the ground floor, while the first and second floors had a DJ. The bouncer told us we needed to pay 70,000 COP to enter. The ground floor was very small, packed and after about 10 minutes, we decided to go upstairs—only to find that entry there was actually free. We went back to security and asked for a refund since we had been given incorrect information, but they refused. As the place was getting busier, we spoke with who seemed to be the owner. Instead of a refund, we asked if we could use the money for drinks, but he said it was a different company and told us to come back later for the refund. We went upstairs, and there were only about six people there. After a few minutes, the “owner” came over and said the first round was on him. We chose our drinks, but after that, a waiter told us we had a tab open with 231,000 COP remaining—equivalent to about four more drinks. There was no language barrier, as we had two Latin friends with us. We ordered three more cocktails, but when we tried to order a fourth, we were suddenly told that we had run out of credit. Then the manager showed up with a bill we hadn’t asked for, saying we now owed 136,000 COP. Meanwhile, our waiter had disappeared. They also added a 31,000 COP tip. We had to explain again that we were told the tab was already covered. In the end, since we had already consumed the drinks, we felt forced to pay. I asked them to remove the service charge, as it didn’t seem fair. We paid and left with a bitter impression. The place was still almost empty even at 1 a.m.
Place gets very crowded - in a good way. There is an entry fee. Service was very quick no matter what we ordered. Everyone in here was having a great time. Definitely a must visit if you're in the area.
