St George’s Cathedral in Cape Town is a breathtaking blend of history, architecture and spirituality. Its soaring arches, stained glass windows and peaceful ambience create a truly awe-inspiring atmosphere. Known as “The People’s Cathedral,” it holds deep historical significance as a place of unity and reflection. I happened to visit while the choir was rehearsing for the evening service, and the music echoing through the stone walls made the experience even more moving and memorable.
A must visit for any visitor and especially those with a spiritual tendency. You walk up some stairs to enter through hbig Doors. Inside you are greeted by the beautiful coloured Windows in contrast with the stone construction of the walls. There is the imagery of Christ on the cross in gold. Don't forget to light a candle for the Black Madonna. Do take the time sit down for a few minutes to experience the space. Ask if the labyrinth is open its worthwhile walking it when visiting.
Beautiful cathedral church! I was on my way to the museum and felt compelled to stop in to look around. I loved the architecture! I even prayed which is something I almost never do but I felt the need to do so because of my Anglican faith. Walking the path to the front, the study room and meetings room brought back memories of the little boy participating in Communion. If you’re ever in the area, please do stop in for a walk around and appreciate the beauty of this magnificent church. Donations are optional but appreciated to maintain the building.
On my way back from the garden I wanted to stop and see the cathedral. It was a bit confusing as the main entrance is not where you go in. I actually walked around twice before finding the entrance. To the right of the main entrance around the corner is where the general public can enter when services are not happening. The church was simply beautiful. Make sure you take a real good look around especially out to the labyrinth. When I was there they were doing a little refurbishment. They were also either testing or practicing with the organ so occasionally I got a little music during my visit. There is no entrance fee, but donations are accepted. Overall a good stop if in Cape Town.
Beautiful old church right next to Company gardens.
