Iconic seafood restaurant, the fried snoek was fresh and delicious, prawns were good, grilled in a tasty peri peri oil. The crayfish was slightly overdone. Hake nicely battered but unfortunately lacked flavour. Be prepared for a +-30 min wait for anything grilled when busy. Cash only. Decent experience.
I had gone to Kalkys years ago and really enjoyed it. However, we went back about a week ago and were honestly disappointed. The man behind the counter (George) was so unbelievably unfriendly. He ignored me initially, and then was very blunt and cold when taking my order. I asked him where the bathroom was and he said it was outside around the building. He didn’t bother to tell me I needed a key, and made me go back to him, wait in a queue to ask for the key. The waitress was eating an orange while serving us, so just picture someone unfriendly walking around with food in their mouth and a handful of peels while serving you a plate. The same waitress watched a plastic bag fly into the ocean and did nothing about it. They also serve single use plastic cutlery, which is appalling in 2026 given the information we have about how this harms our marine life and oceans. Even worse is that the restaurant sits on the harbour, so they should care more about protecting the environment, but don’t. The food was average - fish was quite oily and calamari a little tough. We won’t be back.
This was my second visit. First visit I didn't get to buy anything because the queue was just too long! Second time we were lucky because we went during the week. It was still very busy but waiting time was short. It is definitely worth the hype!! Had hake and chips with calamari. Definitely coming back to try the peri peri prawns.
It was highl recommended but the food was a let down. Cash only, we had to line up to order. My friend had crayfish served with fries cooked to perfection, even the fries were crisp, but calamari was totally overcooked and rubbery. My pickle octopus was a bit overlooked too although the seasoned oil tasted fabulous. A very popular place, it was very crowded at 1.30pm when we had late lunch.
Bought crayfish. Although good price, was not the best quality and a bit disappointing. The only accept cash, and the bank teller was out of order. Was a struggle to go and get cash, and then not to be impressed with the food
