This was my favorite Mosque to visit. It's art and architecture, while on a. Grand scale, are modest and reserved making the details stand out and enhance the overall appeal. Beauty was not necessarily the focus, but the functional elements shine through as pieces to be admired. The resonance inaide is astounding, the carpets have a charming petina, the walls smoothed and weathered with time. The glass oil lamps are stunning thesubtle geometric lines and painting of the archways is still visible and breaks up the monotone stone work. The mosque was abundantly clean and calm to a solemn point. It was a truly peaceful sanctuary amidst the chaos of old cairo.
Must visit. Mind blowing architecture. You will truly get awestruck by its carving and' art work'. The grave of Shah of Iran is here. Check the photos attached. Each round engraving is a different design.
This a beautiful and historic mosque that adjoins another beautiful and historic mosque. Both can be visited with the same shared ticket which is priced very reasonably. Both are beautiful on the inside as well as the outside. Though I liked the inside of the other mosque better, I found the architecture of this mosque to be more impressive from the outside. For those that come here, know that you will have to remove your shoes like you would at any mosque, and that the counter where you can leave your shoes isn't intended to be free! I saw a few tourists who, when picking up their shoes, didn't give any money to the attendant. One said they didn't have cash, the others just ignored the attendants. It was hard to watch. I know that tipping culture can be strange and off-putting to some people from certain cultures, but in some places (and situations) like this one, it is important to give a small token of appreciation for the person who watched your belongings. Please bring a little cash here or carry your shoes in your bag.
Exquisite old mosque. I have been to many mosques. This one is different. One attraction is that it is so old. But it is also impressive. The stone curvings are beautiful, the architecture is different. A must visit in Cairo.
The Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan is truly one of Cairo’s most magnificent architectural masterpieces. Located near the Citadel, this 14th-century monument is a breathtaking example of Islamic design, history, and craftsmanship. As soon as you walk through its towering entrance, you’re struck by the grand scale of the courtyard and the peaceful echo of footsteps on the stone floor — a perfect mix of majesty and serenity. The mosque was originally built as both a place of worship and a madrasa (religious school), and you can still feel the scholarly and spiritual energy that once filled its halls. Each of the four iwans (vaulted halls) is dedicated to one of the four Sunni schools of thought, which makes the site not only architecturally impressive but also culturally and historically significant. The interior details are stunning — from the massive carved wooden doors to the delicate geometric patterns and Arabic calligraphy. The central courtyard, with its graceful fountain, creates a calm, meditative atmosphere that invites quiet reflection. The staff and guards are friendly and often share fascinating stories about the mosque’s history if you show genuine interest. Photography enthusiasts will love the play of light and shadow throughout the space, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The view of the Citadel from outside the mosque is also incredible. A must-see for anyone visiting Cairo — this monument perfectly embodies Egypt’s rich Islamic heritage and timeless architectural.
