Red Brick Art Museum

Chaoyang
via Google

A striking contemporary museum constructed entirely from red bricks, featuring tranquil, avant-garde water gardens.

Good to know
Located in the far northeast suburbs; worth the journey for the unique architecture and peaceful outdoor installations.

If you like architecture especially brick architecture you have to come here. The highlight of this place is the architecture and it's garden. The art gallery is rather limited. If you love taking photos, this is a photographer's heaven. The garden in the back is a must visit. There is a Cafe & restaurant at the back overlooking the pond with outdoor seating. Simple menus but if the weather is nice the outdoor seating is a great place to spend an afternoon. The place is not big so about 1-2 hours here on a leisurely schedule.

Very ambitious overpriced private museum at the outskirts of Peking with average exhibitions of contemporary art, trying to position themselves as an international art institution, while lacking general hospitality skills. No discounts for families, family unfriendly, no discounts for art professionals, it is impossible to pay with American and European bank cards, you should bring enough cash or should have Alipay or Wechat. Nobody speaks English at the entrance, if you have a problem with payment it will take ages to speak to someone who is able to make a decision and when you finally find a manager, the staff will be discussing you in Chinese in front of your face (my husband understands Chinese). Beautiful architecture and garden, but once again it is pretty small and overpriced in comparison to other sites in the city. It is a shame that it turned out to be our worst experience in Peking so far, very disappointing. Not worth coming in my opinion.

I think this place is ok. It’s a bit over rated / over hyped by those Instagrammers so I was here to check it out. The architectures in the courtyard behind the main exhibition were more interesting than the exhibition itself... parking is limited so you might want to come early. The entrance fee is a bit steep for what you actually can see in the museum... not sure if I would recommend this place but if you want to post something on Instagram yeah maybe this is a good place to get some pictures...

Nice interesting space designed by Renown scholar Dong yugan. Using large amount of red bricks, the museum achieved a certain nostalgic spatial experiences and played quite masterfully with light/shadow, craftsmanship. It also has a permanent installation by Olafur Elliasson. Tickets are expensive, 130 rmb, so prepare your student id if you have any.... The traffic here however is terrible terrible, far away from any public transportation. Your only traffic means here is to taxi, which takes about 20-30mins to a subway station.

Must-see if you are into architecture/the arts! The building alone is worth the trip out there in the middle of nowhere. The quality of the content obviously depends on the artists on exhibit at the time of your visit. Currently (SEP18) the Andreas Mühe exhibit is highly recommended. The quality of his photography goes under your skin (maybe I am being partial: My German up-bringing certainly helped me understand his often very German subject matter). Anyway, go go go. So far I have been very disappointed by what Beijing has to offer. But this museum is top notch. It would even befit a sophisticated city like Tokyo.
