The front desk staff were friendly and helpful, and the building itself was easy to find. The communal living room looked nice enough, although I didn’t end up using it much. The bed was comfy and I appreciated that all the plug sockets by the bed actually worked properly. The kitchen was large but felt quite chaotic and poorly organised. It would really benefit from labelled bins or storage containers rather than everything being left in bags with random labels or sticks attached. I also noticed some “free food” mixed in with regular food instead of being clearly separated, and another guest had to point out where it was. It was also unclear whether the spray bottles around the sinks were washing-up liquid or surface cleaner. My room needed a deeper clean. There were dried splash marks under the bed storage area, dust on the windowsill, old hair bobbles by the bed, and a broken roller blind left wedged between the wall and the bed. There was also a broken door near the sofa room that looked like it had been left unrepaired for a while. Overall, the hostel felt quite worn down and in need of refreshing. The atmosphere seemed okay, but I didn’t get particularly warm or welcoming vibes compared to other hostels I’ve stayed in. I’d stay again if better options weren’t available, but it’s not somewhere I’d rave about or rush back to.

The staff at reception were so friendly and helpful, unfortunately it doesn’t make up for the rest. The room was SO hot and it was impossible to get fresh air as the windows are blocked. Also it’s the smallest 6-bed dorm ever, barely bigger than a jail cell, it is just impossible to move around as soon as there is anyone opening their luggage- it even feels unsafe because what if there’s a fire or another emergency? The common areas are below average, cleanliness is clearly not the priority. There were like 5 toilets and 3 showers for an entire floor, what a joke. In the kitchen several of the fridges/freezers were out of use. The only positive thing is the location which is quite central. However there are works or something in the street, they stay super early in the morning like 5-6 am and it WILL wake you up- if you managed to get to sleep anyway cos remember you’ll be too hot to sleep comfortably. In short it’s the worst Haka House I’ve ever stayed at. If you can afford it Lylo on Cook Street (also in the CBD) is way better value for money.

My experience at the Haka House in Auckland was fantastic, definitely deserving of a 5-star rating all around. The space was large, tidy, and quite cozy. The mattress was cozy, the linens were fresh and warm, and the cushions were nice. Maintaining a perfectly clean bed and bathroom is crucial; I sensed that the focus on those aspects was expertly executed. I’m really pleased I chose this hotel for my time in Auckland, and I would strongly recommend staying here

The staff are so friendly and knowledgeable! They make you feel welcome as soon as you walk through the door, and are always there to help. Great central location. Rooms and facilities are good, love having a privacy curtain and sockets right by the bed! Could do with a pool table though.

The rooms are unsafe, and not that clean. Windows on the second floor open fully. I asked to get my school group transferred to alternative rooms and the receptionist didn't want to know. Not suitable for school groups or young people.
