The best souvlaki in Athens. Hands down the best. From the friendly staff to the juicy meat, fresh tomatoes and onions. There’s nothing that beats this. This place is always crowded but you can understand why with quality this good. Grab a stand outside and devour the souvlaki whilst it’s hot. So much history here - highly recommended if you are in Omonia.

I came here for lunch, as I had heard that this store has an interesting take on the gyro. Indeed they do! There was quite the line to order, and then for 2€80 I got the atypical gyro with beef after a bit of a wait, as you first wait in line to order and then to collect your food. The kitchen is super simple, but impressive. There are four men working either to cut tomatoes, heat pita, cook the meat, or fold the gyro. They move quick, but had a *ton* of orders. Anyhow in about fifteen minutes I had my gyro, which I happily tucked into for lunch. The taste was incredibly good and I quite liked the beef taste. That said it was a bit on the small side and considering they were just 2€80 each I would have happily gotten another one to complete my lunch. 10/10!

A hidden local gem in Omonia. It’s not well known by tourist, locals were even surprised to see us in line. But the flavor… unbelievable. We had three souvlaki (at €2.70 each). The pita, the meat, and the spicy sauce were all incredible. Since the pitas are small, it makes sense to order two per person. The atmosphere will feel familiar to anyone who loves places like Karadeniz Döner in İstanbul, you can really feel the historical character of the place. It was the best thing we ate during our Athens trip. The taste is still on our minds. 🤤

The best spicy souvlaki in Athens—a true 1950s legend! If you want the real taste of Athens, head to this hidden gem near Omonia. Established in the fifties, they keep it simple with just two options: traditional or spicy. It is easily one of the most affordable spots in the entire city. Highlight: I highly recommend the spicy souvlaki. Unlike other places in Athens that claim to be spicy, this actually has a kick! The beef is incredibly juicy and comes wrapped with a handful of crunchy pickles and fresh salad. It’s easily the best I’ve had in the city. It’s a classic standing-room-only deli. You’ll see locals grabbing 2 or 3 wraps and a cold beer from the fridge to eat at the standing tables. Pro Tip: During the lunch rush, the queue is long with motorbikes everywhere, but the system is lightning-fast. Just pay the cashier, take your receipt to the counter, and the three grill masters behind the stand will have you sorted in no time. Don't wait until the last minute! I went 30 minutes before closing and the spicy option was already sold out as they were cleaning up. You’ll know you’ve found it when you see the crowded tents a few meters from the corner. Friendly, fast, and legendary.

Lefteris o Politis is a legendary place in Athens that has been doing the same thing since 1951, and doing it fantastically well. What they serve here is not exactly what you would call a typical souvlaki. It is a small grilled pita bread filled with a beef kebab/burger, tomatoes, onions, parsley and spices. The pita is grilled together with the meat and then filled with the special beef meat, a bit of onion and tomato, some spices and that is it. Very simple, but incredibly delicious. The flavor is amazing and everything comes together perfectly in this small pita. The place itself is extremely casual. You just go there, stand in line in front of the cashier and say how many you want, one, two or three. Most of the people there are locals who clearly know this place very well, although there are also tourists who have discovered this little temple of flavor. You take your pita, grab a drink, and stand outside at one of the high tables to eat it. There is no real sitting down, you just enjoy it there quickly and go. The taste is so good that it is very easy to eat two without even thinking. I barely managed to stop myself from ordering a third one. It is definitely one of those simple places that you absolutely have to visit in Athens just to experience this classic taste.
