A wonderful museum that deserves far more attention than it seems to receive. After days of visiting archaeological sites and museums filled with statues, temples, and ancient artifacts, this museum offered something different: a glimpse into the lives of ordinary Greeks across the centuries. The beautifully reconstructed interiors, traditional costumes, intricate jewelry, textiles, carved wooden furnishings, and household objects bring history to life in a way that is both intimate and memorable. The craftsmanship on display is extraordinary. The carved church screens, doors, and architectural elements are masterpieces in their own right, while the elaborate silver and gold jewelry and embroidered costumes reveal the rich cultural influences that shaped Greece through the centuries. What I appreciated most was that this museum focuses on people rather than empires. Instead of telling the story of ancient Greece, it tells the story of Greeks - their homes, traditions, faith, clothing, celebrations, and daily lives. The reconstructed rooms in particular allow you to imagine real people sitting, talking, working, and living in these spaces. I was particularly awestruck by the centuries-old Egyptian cotton textiles. Their preservation is so remarkable that I initially assumed they were modern replicas, only to discover they were authentic historical pieces from 100s of years ago. Seeing such fragile fabric survive the passage of time was unforgettable. The Maria Callas section provides an interesting contrast, connecting traditional Greek culture with one of modern Greece's most celebrated international figures. If you want to understand not just Greek history but Greek life, this museum is well worth your time. One of the most engaging and rewarding museum visits of my trip to Greece.

Wow! Great collection not only from ancient times. Definitely recommend. Make sure to take your headphones with you (they have an audio guide). 3 or 4 hours will be enough to enjoy the whole collection.

Top tip - free entry on Thursday evening's from 1800hrs (I suggest check with the museum if in doubt). We visited on a Thursday evening in January and it wasn't busy at all. The museum is an absolute gem - three floors packed with exhibits (all clearly labelled and with English translation). Very well laid out and in themes which are all different and interesting. Well worth a visit - I think the entrance fee is 12 euros if you don't get in for free on a Thursday evening. It's easy to find too - just a few easy minutes walk up a main road from Syntagma Square.

The museum is located on a main avenue, with an entrance fee of €12.50. We visited on a weekday around noon, and it was very quiet, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The layout inside the museum is extremely easy to follow. The exhibits are clearly numbered, and you simply move from one section to the next, with each number representing works from a specific historical period. This makes the visit very smooth and well-organized. Because it was so calm, walking through the museum was truly pleasant and relaxing. In addition, the collection includes many impressive and high-quality artifacts. We genuinely enjoyed our visit. I would definitely recommend this museum to anyone visiting Athens.
