The building is beautiful and location is great. Has a lot history in it. The lobby is nice and most of the staff is very friendly. Food is very good as well as breakfast. I am very familiar at going to nice hotels and the room is definitely NOT a 5 star hotel. The bathroom has not upscale materials or anything special. What made even more upset was that the shower was not clean, it had hair on the floor. I don’t mind if the room is not huge but as long as it is clean. They didn’t even leave slippers which for me it’s a MUST and even more because it is all carpet. The decoration is not my taste, but that’s not relevant here. I stayed by myself but if you ask for a one bed room, it should be a big bed despite is there’s one or two people. The bed is a full bed (American size). When I got to the room at night, they didn’t even put water. Usually in a 5 star hotel they would leave fruit or chocolate or something to welcome you with. The TV did not work… In general, I would say I would not recommend anyone to stay here. If you want to have a nice lunch, the food is very good and the patio is beautiful.
This hotel is literally in the centre of Amsterdam. In fact, the city is built around the Sofitel The Grand Amsterdam, which makes everything very easy to access. A big thanks to Isabelle, who took care of everything. As Black card holders, we were upgraded to a magnificent junior suite. It's not as big as in the United States, but we had a breathtaking view of the hotel courtyard. Marc took care on our luggage and he was professional! The food at the restaurant is really delicious and well served, everyone is very friendly and smiling, just like in the United States. Room service was very fast; we ordered crème brûlée to accompany the film and didn't have to wait so long. We didn't know how to use the mirroring option on the television and decided to contact the night service. Waldo knew the television like the back of his hand, he explained how to do it and it worked! I was able to transfer my phone screen to the television in less than a minute thanks to his help. We definitely wanna come back.
Having never been to Amsterdam before, the hotel was ideally placed for us to be able to get around. The accommodation provided by the hotel was superb, have never stayed in anywhere like it. You could not ask for better staff from the time you were greeted at the entrance, then reception and by everyone else you were served by. The quality, details and attention to the appearance of everything in the hotel is marvellous. The food in the restaurant is gorgeous but more selection in the evening menu would be nice. You cannot fault the breakfast one bit, selection is so vast. We would certainly stay there again.
The Grand hotel - The building’s history goes back to 1578, long before it became a luxury hotel. Over the centuries it’s served many roles — including a city convent headquarters — before becoming the legendary hotel you can visit today. One of the coolest bits of history: Princess Beatrix (who later became Queen of the Netherlands) was married to Claus von Amsberg in the hotel’s Council Chamber back in 1966. The hotel’s top-tier restaurant, Bridges, is located in what was once the canteen of Amsterdam’s old Town Hall — making your meal there a bite of history as well as fine cuisine. The hotel has a beautiful inner garden terrace — a peaceful little green escape tucked away from the bustle of central Amsterdam. Service is good, for Dutch standards of hospitality they are really trying to be good hosts. Food it is interesting.. there are few different restaurants in the hotel. Hotel is situated 5 mins walk from Dam square. It is pity that such a nice classy hotel is in the middle of tourist traps.
We had a very good experience overall. Staff was very welcoming and helpful. Room and bed was comfortable and clean. Only problem we had in the room was the temperature. It was a bit cold for us to sleep comfortable. Especially on the first night, regardless of putting the heating up to 25c the room didnt get any warm. We didnt use much of the facilities in the hotel as we were out and about and only came back to sleep at night. Overall I would recommend the hotel as the location was very convenient. Staff was also very good both at the reception and at the door.
